CITY AND LEGACY PARKS ANNOUNCE OUTDOOR RECREATION INITIATIVE

Knoxville takes the first step toward putting itself on the map as a premier outdoor recreation community with the launch of Outdoor Knoxville, a three-pronged initiative to capitalize on the exceptional outdoor recreational assets found in and around Knoxville. It includes a new Adventure Center, a website and a three-day festival this summer.

The most visible presence for Outdoor Knoxville will be the Outdoor Knoxville Adventure Center to be created in the City-owned Gateway Pavilion Building at Volunteer Landing. Legacy Parks Foundation, a Knoxville-based non-profit focused on expanding parks, open space and recreational opportunities, will operate the center in partnership with River Sports Outfitters.

"Outdoor Knoxville will showcase our trails, parks, waterways and greenways for both visitors and Knoxville residents," said Mayor Madeline Rogero. "We have great opportunities here for recreation in beautiful natural settings just minutes from downtown, and this effort will help promote those and encourage everyone to get out and enjoy them."?

The Outdoor Knoxville Adventure Center will serve as the recreational hub for not only Knoxville but also the entire region. It is centrally located with easy connections to downtown Knoxville, the University of Tennessee, I-40, and all the trails and greenways on both sides of the river.

Outdoor Knoxville will be a destination through a unique mix of boutique retail, outdoor equipment rentals and sales, and local events and excursions.

Legacy Parks Foundation will locate its office on the second level and manage the space for public events and activities. The theater and large room will be made available for public use. Recreational, civic and community groups will be encouraged to hold meetings in the space for a nominal charge. These rentals for business and private functions would generate revenue to support Legacy Parks Foundation's operations and mission.

River Sports Outfitters, a 29-year-old recreational retailer and outdoor excursion provider in Knoxville, will manage the first level. They will feature boat, stand-up paddleboard and bike rentals as well as retail space offering outdoor gear and equipment. Premium outdoor brands Patagonia, The North Face, Smart Wool and Mountain Hardware will create boutique concept shops within the River Sports Outfitters retail space.

In addition to the rental and retail components, Legacy Parks Foundation and River Sports Outfitters will offer public programs and group outings from the facility. Maps, directions and general information about recreational opportunities throughout the region will be provided at an information center in the building. Outdoor-related events held at the facility will bring people down to the waterfront and get them out to play.

The Gateway Pavilion Building is owned by the city, and originally housed the Gateway Regional Visitors Center. In recent years, the building has been vacant, and the city has paid to maintain it. City Council will be asked to approve a lease with Legacy Parks Foundation at its March 6 meeting. If approved, the Outdoor Knoxville Adventure Center will open in mid-April.

The second element of the Outdoor Knoxville initiative is a new website, OutdoorKnoxville.com. It is a robust, comprehensive portal to all outdoor recreational activities, venues, and events in our region. This highly interactive website has gathered information, videos, photos, and other related content from a broad and inclusive variety of sources, creating an easy-to-use resource for all levels of outdoor adventurers. The site officially launched today.

OutdoorKnoxville.com will position Knoxville, and the region, as a recreational destination by showcasing the abundance of parks, trails, greenways, activities, and amenities that we enjoy in Knoxville.

It will be a powerful tool for everyone:

She will keep the content current and exciting, review and manage all postings, maintain the Facebook page, and produce a weekly e-newsletter showcasing events and local activities. OutdoorKnoxville.com offers a year-round activity calendar that can be added to by anyone. Outdoor KnoxFest is the third key element in the initiative. Legacy Parks Foundation has been actively working to make East Tennessee a recreational destination of the Southeast. The initial work has been focused on creating a 1,000-acre urban wilderness and recreational corridor stretching along the Tennessee River's south shore, from the Forks of the River Wildlife Management Area to Alcoa Highway. This corridor will parallel and connect to the greenways along the north side of the river.

During the past five years Legacy Parks Foundation has raised more than $3 million for parks, greenways and recreational venues, added more than 200 acres of parkland to Knox County and helped protect nearly 1,000 acres of farm and forest land in East Tennessee.

Simplicity is always more powerful than complexity. Profound truths come in simple phrasings that cut to the bare bones of the thought or situation. Complexity is over-packaged language that leaves us feeling off balance and wondering if our interpretation is pure and accurate.

But lets get back to basics. I said last week that our voices lack distinction because we all walk around parroting one another, all using the same old clichs, making our voices indistinguishable from the vast choir of people saying the exact same things.

So we blend in rather than stand out.

That can change by ridding our language of all those echoes. Here are some examples of common clichs, followed by the same information expressed in a distinctive way.

Clich: Think outside the box. (Irony: Using clichs isnt thinking outside the box.)

Revision: Come up with original ideas.

Its a no brainer.

It couldnt be any more obvious if you handed it to me on the end of a skewer.

This isnt rocket science. (Irony: Rocket science isnt actually all that complicated.)

This isnt particle physics.

This is a win-win situation.

Both sides benefit from this deal.

We need to focus on core competencies.

We need to stick with what we do best.

The proposal is cost prohibitive.

The proposal is too expensive.

We need to hit the ground running.

We need to move fast.

I dont have the bandwidth.

I dont have time.

The 800-pound gorilla.

The big problem.

Improve ROI (return on investment).

Improve our financial performance.

Our mission is to assist the economically disadvantaged.

Our mission is to help the poor.

Which of these two managers do you think the CEO will consider direct and clear thinking?

Donald Regan blew smoke. Patrick Buchanan lit a fire. No surprise that Buchanan, not Regan, was the White House communications director.

Simply rewording clichs and speaking more directly is just a first-level effort in the campaign to develop a voice distinctive enough to turn you into an oak among willows. We havent even touched on tone, color, metaphors, similes, storytelling, and so on.

Still, this first-level effort alone can make you a remarkably refreshing speaker and writer, one who sounds more like the office soloist than a choir boy or girl.

James Sethian and Robert Saye, mathematicians who both hold joint appointments with the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) and the University of California (UC) Berkeley, have won the 2011 Cozzarelli Prize for the best scientific paper in the category of Engineering and Applied Sciences. Their winning paper, "The Voronoi Implicit Interface Method for computing multiphase physics," introduces a robust, accurate and efficient numerical method for tracking large numbers of interacting and evolving regions (phases) whose motions are determined by complex interactions of geometry, physics, constraints and internal boundary conditions.

"This class of numerical methods presents a mathematically unified approach to complex interconnected moving interfaces, and opens the door to computing a host of challenging problems," says Sethian, who heads the Mathematics Group of the Berkeley Lab's Computational Research Division.

Problems that the VIIM can be applied to include dry foams, crystal grain growth, the mixing of multiple materials, and the formation of multicellular structures. These interfaces are the boundaries of individual regions/cells, which are referred to as phases. The physics, chemistry, and mechanics that drive the motion of these interfaces are often complex, and include topological challenges when interfaces are destroyed and created.

"We are currently applying the VIIM to computing drainage in industrial foams, multi-phase mixing, and the stability and evolution of biological cell clusters under fluid and geometric forces," says Saye.

The Cozzarelli Prize is sponsored by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science (PNAS) to acknowledge papers published during the year in PNAS demonstrate the highest scientific excellence and originality. The annual award was established in 2005 and named the Cozzarelli Prize in 2007 to honor late PNAS Editor-in-Chief Nicholas R. Cozzarelli. Six prizes are awarded in the six broadly defined classes under which the National Academy of Sciences is organized.

Sethian and Saye will receive their prize at the PNAS Editorial Board Meeting on April 29, 2012, in Washington, DC. Papers receiving the 2011 Cozzarelli Prize were chosen from the more than 3,800 research articles published in PNAS in 2011.

The term "hot" is a relative one, and according to The-Dream, the heat index can change quickly. "That list is gonna keep fluctuating, but I think it's a disservice to what Jay has done to even put him on that list period," he said. "If he was a new rapper, right now, he'd be #1 on the list."

With Hov taken out of the discussion, the self-proclaimed Radio Killa, who also wrote on 'Ye's "All of the Lights," sees his pal Kanye at the top of the game at the moment, but it's close; he also believes Lil Wayne has a case as well.

"I think Wayne and Kanye kinda go back and forth, it just depends on when Wayne's up for it, I think. When you push him and he's up for it musically he's great," The-Dream said. "Then there is certain points ... they're pushing each other and then Kanye goes. There's something musically I can tell when somebody has an edge on someone else."

The workshop?s originality rests on the comparison between different cinematographic practices (Great-Britain and France) who have created a strong dynamic and ensured their success. The workshop makes a new breakthrough by bringing together the energy of new talents ? screenwriters and directors ? from the ? countries of the Arab Spring ? who will bring a new dynamic and powerful stories, while, in return, being able to benefit from expertise and an opening-up towards Europe.

For its 2012 edition the workshop will therefore welcome six screenwriters from the ? countries of the Arab Spring ?, who will join the four screenwriters who are graduates of the FEMIS, and the four screenwriters who are graduates of the NFTS.

The workshop will take place over four sessions.

The candidates have to be French or English-speaking. The screenwriters from the Arab countries will, if they wish, be able to work in their own language in parallel.

On Monday at Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Okla., Gingrich called Obama ?the most dangerous president in modern American history? and added, ?you cannot put a gun rack in a Volt.?

In the past year, Republicans have similarly taken aim at federal standards to phase out cheap but energy-inefficient incandescent light bulbs, saying that manipulation of markets to promote energy savings has hurt the budgets of everyday Americans.?

In some respects, though, the Volt is an even more potent political symbol for Republicans because of its links to the Obama administration ? both through the controversial bailout that saved Chevrolet and ultimately gave rise to the Volt, as well as the $10,000-per-car subsidy that President Obama's new budget proposes.

?The Volt has been a lightning rod even before we got into the heat of the campaign season,? says Bill Visnic, senior analyst with Edmunds.com. For detractors, it objectified ?why the bailout was wrong,? because it produced a vehicle that ?mostly rich people buy and is mostly subsidized by the government.?

Chevrolet introduced the Volt in late 2010. Chevrolet's parent company,?GM, is one of two Detroit automakers the federal government helped bail out in 2009 to prevent it from falling into bankruptcy.
