For many years now article marketing has been the "go to" marketing tool for small business owners who want to market their websites. Increasingly though, I've noticed that interest is expanding to larger companies as well. I received this question recently from someone who works at a large corporation:

"Do you think that article marketing would work for a large company? I know it works well for small business owners and that it's great for establishing the expertise of an author, but as a large company we want to bring attention to the company and not any particular person in our organization. Also, I don't know if our traditional website would be very marketable. A lot of people these days have blogs and sites with lots of informational content, but our website is a static one that just has info about your company. Many thanks for your input on this!"

I'm so glad that someone asked this! There is no reason why submitting articles wouldn't work for a large company, and I know many SEO specialists who work with large companies and who use article marketing as part of an overall online marketing plan for the company.

I just want to be sure that you understand how article marketing works, and I think that will help you to understand why business article marketing is not restricted to just small businesses, but would actually work for any size of business.

Article marketing is great for establishing the expertise of an author, but that's not the main benefit by a long shot. The main reason that people engage in creating free reprint articles is to get a higher search engine ranking for their website. This is how article marketing helps improve a web page's ranking:

You submit articles on the general topic of your website. These would not be articles about your business or your website, but they would instead be articles that teach your readers things that they need to know about your general niche.

Along with every article you submit you will also create what is called a resource box. Through that link in your resource box where the keywords are linked to your website, you are sending very powerful information to Google and the other search engines about what your website is about. This helps Google and the other search engines to classify your website and rank it appropriately. With consistent marketing, ideally the pages on your website will show up high in the rankings when someone does a search for one of your keywords.

You can discover the best keywords for your website by using a keyword research tool--there are many of these available online. When you do keyword research, you will come up with a variety of different phrases associated with the topic of your website, and you will alternate using those phrases in your resource boxes each time you submit an article.

So, that is how article marketing helps business owners--it can help your website to get a higher ranking, and the higher the ranking the more people will be referred to your website. The more targeted visitors who are referred to your website, the more potential sales and business for you.

Article marketing works for all types of websites, whether they're the static traditional website or a blog. Even among small business owners, not everyone has a blog--many are marketing traditional websites.

(AP) ? A man who stole a car at gunpoint, shot at Phoenix police officers and then led them on a chase that ended with his suicide broadcast on national television was identified Saturday as a wanted felon with a long criminal history.

Jodon F. Romero, 33, was wanted for violating his parole for a weapons conviction and had numerous other violent crimes in his background, police spokesman Sgt. Tommy Thompson said.

At the end of an hour-long pursuit on an interstate west of Phoenix Friday, Romero pulled into the desert and an officer shot at him, although it appears he missed, Thompson said. Romero then walked off the dirt road, put a gun to his head and killed himself.

Fox News was covering the chase that began about midday Friday using a live helicopter shot from Phoenix affiliate KSAZ-TV. Anchor Shepard Smith told viewers that the video was supposed to be on a delay so it could be cut off if something went awry.

"We really messed up, and we're all very sorry," Smith said minutes after the suicide aired. Fox apologized for showing the violence on air. KSAZ itself was not airing the chase.

On Saturday, Thompson said police did everything in their power to de-escalate the situation, but Romero seemed intent on continuing a crime spree that began with a minor incident where he apparently hit a passing car with his hand, leading to a call to police.

As officers were heading to the south Phoenix area, they learned that a Dodge Caliber sedan had just been stolen at gunpoint from a nearby restaurant parking lot.

They spotted the car and gave chase, but pulled back when Romero running red lights and endangering the public, Thompson said. Instead, unmarked cars and a police helicopter began following him at a distance.

Romero drove into an industrial area and spotted two marked police units, with one officer standing beside one car talking with another officer. He veered into their lane and opened fire, missing the officers but hitting one patrol car.

He then got onto Interstate 10, heading west toward California at speeds in excess of 100 mph.

The police helicopter and unmarked police vehicles followed at a distance, and the Fox helicopter began its coverage.

Romero fired at the police helicopter during the chase, but didn't hit it, Thompson said.

About 75 miles west of Phoenix he got off the interstate and drove off into the surrounding desert.

He eventually stopped, got out of the car and began walking down a dirt road. That's when an officer fired one shot at him.

Although Thompson said it appear the shot missed, television footage shows Romero stumbling and falling down and appearing to feel his torso before waking into some brush.

That's when he shot himself in the head.

An autopsy will determine if he was actually shot by an officer as well.

Thompson said it was clear to officers they had to stop Romero from getting back to a populated area.

"Anybody who will shoot at police officers, that shows a total disregard for them, will shoot at anybody else," he said. "And this needed to be put to an end. Even after we backed out all the marked units he still continued to go."

Arizona Department of Corrections records show Romero was imprisoned from April 2010 to June 2012 for a felony weapons charge.

If you're anything like me, then you've probably shunned Mayfair as an impossible unaffordable place to stay. What's there? Hotels where the afternoon tea service costs as much as a night in an average property, and there are no prices on anything as if you need to ask, then you definitely can't afford it.

?

That's what I figured, anyway, until that is I was lucky enough to stay at the Holiday Inn Mayfair. Wait a minute, I hear you ask, what's the catch? Is it in some werdly unfashionable part of the neighbourhood, hidden behind some bins? Well, no it isn't. It's in a prime spot right next to Green Park, the tube station of the same name and all of the blatant swankery of this plum part of town.

I would go one further, in fact, and say that it's in a near-ideal location within Mayfair, being as it is equidistant from both the West End AND Hyde Park, so whether it's the capital's most famous shopping district or it's best-loved greenery you're after, you don't have far to walk either way.

?

Anyway, with much relief on a satisfyingly hot day, I took a minute's stroll from Green Park tube to the bright lobby, where the staff were as welcoming as the weather. Professional and courteous, I heard them speak at least four languages in the short time I was checking in, which verges on showing off, and would be if they weren't all so damn charming.

?

The hotel itself is a big city hotel, some 200 or so rooms and as busy as you'd expect for central London. There's a feeling of space, though, and even though it was peak season, I didn't feel at all crowded.

?

The rooms are fairly standard, but noticeably bright and clean, colourful and airy. And many of them have stirring views of some of the capital's well-known views, the grand buildings around Green Park, the bustle of tourists and central London life. It's all quite pleasing.

?

The pleasantry continues downstairs in the hotel's bar and restaurant, Nightingales. The decor is modern, stylish without being stuffy and it's an affordable option, particularly in these parts.

?

I encountered the serving staff under unusual circumstances. I was late down for breakfast, and they delayed clearing the last of the tasty buffet to let me sit down and grab a bite and a coffee. Due to a weird timetable that day, I was also first down to lunch (I'm not usually such a glutton, just it would be a long time before I could eat again) and so there was a slightly awkward (on my part) "here I am again" moment as the same breakfast staff sat me down.

?

No matter, the lovely server sat me down and we made a few jokes about my appetite and a potentially eggy situation was made perfectly enjoyable by the personal touch. Oh, and the food - at both breakfast and my lunch two hours later - was light, fresh and delicious.

?

I had a few minor business tasks that again, the reception desk were happy to help me with, and with that I was on my way, stepping out into Mayfair, feeling all the while as if I'd found a loophole in the law that says you have to spend a fortune to stay here. The sunshine seemed even brighter that morning.

Hearing brains are 'deaf' to disappearance of sounds, study reveals

ScienceDaily (Sep. 27, 2012) ? Our brains are better at hearing new and approaching sounds than detecting when a sound disappears, according to a study published September 27 funded by the Wellcome Trust. The findings could explain why parents often fail to notice the sudden quiet from the playroom that usually accompanies the onset of mischief.

Hearing plays an important role as an early warning system to rapidly direct our attention to new events. Indeed we often rely on sounds to alert us to things that are happening around us before we see them, for example somebody walking into the room while our back is turned to the door. Yet little is known about how our brains make sense of the sounds happening around us and what makes us hear certain events while completely missing others.

Researchers at the UCL Ear Institute wanted to try and understand what makes certain sounds easily detectable while others go unnoticed. They created artificial 'soundscapes' composed of different on-going sounds and asked listeners to detect the onset or disappearance of different sound-objects within the melee.

Overall, the team found that listeners are remarkably tuned to detecting new sounds around them but are much less able to detect when a sound disappears. In busy sound environments, the participants missed more than half of the changes occurring around them and the changes that were detected involved much longer reaction times. The effects were observed even in relatively simple soundscapes and didn't seem to be affected by volume.

Dr Maria Chait, who led the research at the UCL Ear Institute, said: "On the one hand, we might expect to be more sensitive to the appearance of new events. In terms of survival, it is clearly much more important to detect the arrival of a predator than one that has just disappeared. But this reasoning doesn't apply to other situations. Imagine walking in a forest with your friend behind you and suddenly having the sound of their footsteps disappear. Our results demonstrate that there are a large number of potentially urgent events to which we are fundamentally not sensitive. We refer to this phenomenon as 'disappearance blindness'"

The study also explored how resilient listeners are to scene interruptions. In busy scenes, such as those we often face in the world around us, important scene changes frequently coincide in time with other events. The study showed that even brief interruptions, such as a short 'beep' occurring at the same time as the change, are sufficient to make listeners fail to notice larger scene changes. It is thought that this occurs because the interruption briefly captures our attention and prevents the information about the change from reaching our consciousness.

"Understanding what makes certain events pop out and grab attention while others pass by un-noticed is important not only for understanding how we perceive the world but also has important practical applications. For example, to aid the design of devices intended to help professionals such as air traffic controllers and pilots who operate in environments where the detection of change is critical," added Dr Chait.

Folks, we?ve reached a milestone: For the first time ever, people are more likely to access Internet videos on their TVs than their computers, notes?The Wall Street Journal?s AllThingsD blog.

Last year, says consumer-tracking service?NPD, the figures told a different tale: PCs accounted for 48 percent of online video viewing, with televisions following at 33 percent. Now? One year later, the positions are reversed, with TVs coming in at 45 percent and computers representing 31 percent of viewership.

Why the switch? One word: Netflix. Let?s face it, the online video purveyor is practically everywhere these days, in many of the major electronics, streaming consoles and, yes, televisions.

Says writer?Peter Kafka,??NPD figures that 10 percent of homes now have at least one Internet-enabled TV (though I bet that only a minority of them are actually plugged into the Web), and we?re seeing a steady increase in the use of Web-video peripherals, like Blu-ray players, Apple TVs and Microsoft Xbox 360s.?

According to NPD, viewers are getting their online goodies to their TVs in a variety of ways:

  • 43 percent via connected TVs
  • 47 percent hit up VG consoles (Wii, Xbox 360, PS3)
  • 62 percent use streaming media players (Roku, Boxee, Apple TV)
  • 38 percent connect hardwire computers to their TVs
  • 21 percent use BD players

While many cupcakes are either dry and crumbly or have grainy, overabundant frosting, the ones here avoid those common pitfalls. My favorite is a thick wedge of the perfectly simple New York cheesecake, speckled with crunchy vanilla bean seeds and bright specks of lemon zest. Jesus Balestena spends his nights making the 29 flavors of doughnuts for Marietta?s Dough in the Box, while his wife Dannia manages the store by day. Some suggest the bacon fad is done. They haven?t tasted Pine Street?s thick-cut and smoky molasses-and-maple-rubbed version that reignited my bacon lust. And while I am a hopeless bacon fan-girl, I love Pine Street?s emulsified sausages as much or more. It?s the texture of the sausages that win my praise ? not too fine and free of gristle. My favorite flavors include roasted poblano with ancho chiles, traditional Italian and yeasty Wild Heaven, none overwhelming the natural porky goodness. ?JT

The Spotted Trotter

The Spotted Trotter, which refers to itself as a boutique charcuterie house, offers a range of salumi, cured and smoked meats, p?t?s and terrines prepared with humanely raised, hormone-free meats. Local and organic spices are toasted and ground, chiles dried and spice packs created, all in-house. Owner Kevin Ouzts says he pays homage to Old World-style charcuterie while pushing the envelope to develop his own new American style. The Spotted Trotter is one of my first stops when entertaining. I pick up wet-brined coppa, nutty dried chorizo, beef bresaola smooth chicken liver p?t? and maybe a little veal mortadella. The shop also sells southern cheeses and H&F breads to complement charcuterie platters. ?JT

Way up in Cumming there?s a little gem of a chocolate boutique owned by husband-and-wife team Michael and Elizabeth Ashworth. Michael shelved his doctorate in computer science in favor of crafting more than 150 flavors of truffles for The Chocolaterie that run the gamut from red velvet to habanero (youch!). Each gorgeous truffle is hand-painted with chocolate (no candy coatings or confectioner?s glaze) and will have you transfixed, paralyzed by indecision. Does your apple pie truffle taste just like apple pie? That?s because it is. The Chocolaterie makes all of its own fillings, including the pies, cakes and candies contained within each glossy bite. While you?re at it, add a little fudge to your ever-expanding take-home box. One of the 30-40 varieties available daily will surely test your willpower. ?JT

Cacao Atlanta Chocolate Co.

Cacao now has three Atlanta locations, each with its own character but all looking like a stunning (but interactive) chocolate museum. You?ll feel compelled to speak quietly so as not to disturb the chocolate gods, who must grin widely at the quality of the bean-to-bar chocolate produced here. The boutique menu includes a slew of truffles, chocolate bark, chocolate covered salted caramels and sipping chocolate (don?t even get me started on the sipping chocolate with Aztec spices). But it?s in the Love bars that you can truly taste the nuances of the chocolate ? and the love. My favorite is the single-estate, single-varietal 75 percent cacao Pantanemo Love bar with the characteristic dark chocolate bite and smooth notes of caramel. ?JT

If you like Greek yogurt but find some of the commercial brands seem too much like sour cream ? pasty and chalky ? then search out this hometown treasure. This yogurt (both full- and reduced-fat varieties) offers a caressing creaminess that?s truly unique. The Tropical Sweet Heat, with pineapple, mango and a hint of chile pepper, is a standout. ?JK

Decimal Place Farm

Some of our favorite goat?s milk cheese is produced on an 18-acre urban farm near Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. Farmer Mary Rigdon, a self-taught cheesemaker who pursued animal sciences at the University of Georgia, raises Saanen dairy goats and makes a range of goat?s milk cheeses. The chevre masters the delicate balance of tangy to creamy flavor and chalky to smooth texture. It also comes in a party-dip style garlic and dill or a lavender-fennel version. Look for flavored cheddars, one of which won the 2011 Goat Milk Cheese Competition last fall. ?JT

In this day of increasingly ?inventive? ice cream flavors, the ice cream itself can be an afterthought. Create a quality product without any gimmicks, and you can distinguish yourself from the crowd. That?s High Road?s Valrhona chocolate ice cream. Concentrated chocolate and creaminess. Yet, that?s not to say High Road?s other small-batch-made ice creams like coffee and cream (my favorite) and peanut butter brittle won?t linger in your memory for lengthy stretches. Oh, did I mention the Aztec chocolate and caramel? And then there?s? ?JT

Izzy?s Cheese

Here?s a match made in stretchy cheese heaven. Mozzarella maker Antonio Lo Russo has teamed with Newborn dairy farmer Russell Johnston to turn fresh local milk into the city?s best mozzarella. The fior di latte cheese is gorgeous ? soft, with that gentle springiness that gives way to buttery waves of flavor. The creamery also makes an aged scamorza and a burrata. Look for wider distribution in coming months. ?JK

Orobianco

This artisanal mozzarella maker has just started to gear up. But if you can get your hands on its burrata, you?re in for bliss. This mozzarella filled with a tender stracciatella of cheese and cream is superlative. Cut it open and serve with nothing more than a drop or two of good olive oil or balsamic. Make sure to let it come to room temperature first to fully appreciate its buttery finish. ?JK

If Ethiopian Debello is on the daily menu of bean varieties, don?t think about ordering anything else. ?JK

There are a lot of milky, frothy, cinnamon-dusted coffee drinks that call themselves cappuccino. But if you want a cappuccino done right ? 1/3 coffee, 1/3 steamed milk, 1/3 froth ? then go to Octane. It?s a drink to savor, one that coats your tongue in soft milkiness before the bitter insistence of the espresso cuts through. He has a special interest in the stuffed pastas of Lombardy, such as Pi Fasacc, an intricately folded dumpling filled with herbed taleggio and other cheeses, and Casonsei, a half-moon stuffed with a hot pink paste of beets and smoked cheese. He also makes a full line of fresh dried pastas, including memorable nutmeg-scented garganelli that will best any factory penne in your cupboard. He plans to open a Buckhead storefront where you can buy the pastas and snack on Roman street food. Can?t wait. ?JK

This small-batch granola company, based in Carrollton, sources organic ingredients locally when possible. It prepares seven different varieties of granola, including the Good Morning, Granola, which it calls ?the original hippie granola from the 1960s.? Our family favorite is the Heirloom Oatmeal Cookie granola. Based on a family oatmeal cookie recipe, this variety mixes it up with organic rolled oats, sunflower seeds, cinnamon, maple and Georgia pecans. Hey, kids, here?s your best chance at eating cookies for breakfast. ?JT

The freshly made basil pesto from Atlanta-based Hope?s Gardens is one of my ultimate comfort foods. It?s a simple harmony of ingredients: rich olive oil, nutty Parmigiano-Reggiano, sharp raw garlic, earthy pine nuts and sweet licorice-scented basil. Hope?s Gardens also prepares pestos like the tangy (and nut-free) sun-dried tomato (great on baked fish), jalape?o-cilantro and the mint, green pea and almond pesto (vegan). Fairywood Thicket

Fairywood Thicket, local producer of jellies, jams and chutneys, took inspiration for its name from the wild elderberry bushes growing on its Fairburn farm. Eclectic jars hold products containing only fruit, pectin, sugar and spices. Nothing artificial, no corn syrup here. The product list began with elderberry jelly and has grown to include a number of savory jellies and chutneys like the scorching hot inferno jelly to a mild cranberry and serrano pepper jelly. Images of fairies frolicking in the thicket will dance in your head as you sample the vanilla blackberry, strawberry lavender and the white peach fruit jellies. ?JT

Want a pickle with some pop? Try Phickles Pickles, an Athens-based pickled veggie company. Pickled snap beans will pucker you up, carrots pack some heat and the okra plays it just right ? smooth and crisp with a slow burn. Also look for pickled green tomatoes, jalape?os and asparagus. After Paste publisher Nick Purdy found himself without a magazine to publish, he turned his attention from music to his other love ? beer. Let&#39;s Press Play: Website Video Tips & Tricks | Internet Marketing Blog

We had an interesting seminar this morning about the use of videos for your website. It was presented by one of our staff members, Hal, who has a remarkable amount of history in taking, editing, and producing video content for websites and businesses ranging from industrial B2B clients all the way to comic book convention organizations. While she did all the work during the presentation, I was able to attend as a guest and picked her brain to figure out some great tips and tricks on how videos can help your website grow. And if you think it?s all just about traffic, you?re wrong! Here are some of the highlights:

Know Why You?re Making a Video.

Making a cool video for your website sounds fun. You can have moving images on your home page, you can be quirky or serious, you can show off your work environment, whatever you want to do! But ? Why? Why are you making a video? That is the first question you need to answer before you go out and story board, buy equipment, or take valuable time out of your day. Ask yourself what you hope to have this video accomplish. Is it to drive traffic, build brand awareness, or even act as a resource for people in the field? Before you jump head first into this big task, answering this question will make things a lot easier on you.

Know Who Your Audience Is.

You may think that knowing why you?re making a video would go hand-in-hand with knowing who your audience is, but that?s not always the case. For instance, just because you want to make a video tour of your office doesn?t mean that there is an audience that wants to see it! Ask yourself who your customers are (and even who your customers for this particular video would be), and think of what kind of video would be right for them. Are they busy? Do they need a short video to engage with? Are you offering an hour long presentation video for people who missed a conference? Are they ready to dedicate time to the video? Knowing what the audience expects from you will help you understand how to make the best video for them, which goes a long way.

Get Familiar With YouTube!

During our seminar today we talked about a lot of different video hosting sites online. Regardless of whether you host the video on your own site, or on social sites like Vimeo or Facebook, the most bang for your buck is ypically found by companies who when they hose their videos on YouTube. There are a bushel of reasons as to why people reach this decision ? something we could and probably should dedicate an entirely separate blog post to! ? but the main items essentially come down to convenience, cost savings, and measuring return on investment. YouTube offers easy access to upload and edit your videos from a computer or mobile device, is often a default video player application for many devices, is accessible by most everyone, and provides quick and easy ways to conveniently embed the video onto your own website. It?s free to use, and even if a video is embedded on your site, doesn?t cost you bandwith or server space. And the Analytics section they offer is unparalleled in educating you on how people are watching your video, where they?re watching it, and more. Really, it is some amazing stuff aimed at helping you have better videos. But don?t fool yourself! It?s not the only option out there.

Don?t Forget Your Brand!

While it may be easy to get wrapped up in the details of what?s going on behind the camera, make sure you don?t forget what?s happening on the screen, either! For most, branding will be a big purpose of your online videos. But what good will the video do if it doesn?t even mention your brand? Whether it?s someone saying a company name during the video, inserting a logo watermark, website, or phone number throughout the video or at beginning and end slides, you don?t want to forget that your video is supposed to work for you. This is a good rule of thumb, but of course you may have a video where you want the brand to play it a bit more coy. Think of all the viral marketing that Coca-Cola or other big brand names have done where they almost entirely remove themselves from the video, leaving only the customer. This can be a great marketing tactic too, where appropriate.

Be Creative (Dare I Say, ?E?Creative?)

But what are you supposed to do for a video? We?ve touched on a couple of video topic ideas, but the list is always expanding. Popular videos include product showcases for businesses, facility tours, video news releases or quarterly updates, how-to videos, maintenance, funny social videos, and much, much more. The idea is pretty simple though ? Create a video that someone will want to watch. Think about your own video experiences or needs, and think about what you?d hope to find in an online video from someone?s site. Clearly, if you don?t find it useful or entertaining, no one else will either!

Take Time to Do it Right.

Another big takeaway from today?s seminar was the importance of understanding that if you want to do a video right, it will take dedicated time. Our presenter shared for every minute of video, there is at least an hour of editing work, which doesn?t actually include the filming, producing, and other pre-work needed. This isn?t a deterrent, but a reality! If we want quality videos on our websites, we need to make the time to make the video.

Playful gender-bending at the Paris fashion shows

PARIS (AP) ? Blurring the lines between the masculine and feminine is as old as Shakespeare.

Wednesday's fashion week previews in Paris ? the second of eight days on the spring-summer 2013 calendar ? showed that, over the centuries, playful gender-bending has lost none of its creative allure.

Dries Van Noten, who cut his teeth as a men's designer in Antwerp, produced the day's strongest show, mixing traditional menswear cuts with his own floral signature in a harmonious play on color.

Damir Doma, meanwhile, who also trained in Antwerp, fused masculine-tinged Cossack gear, martial arts dress and buckles alongside more feminine touches.

Black, an unusual color for spring, also featured highly on the rotation list ? with London's Gareth Pugh channeling a dark hard, masculine femininity that seemed to indicate the 31-year-old designer was coming of age.

Thursday's shows include Manish Arora, Balmain and Nina Ricci.

DRIES VAN NOTEN

Dries Van Noten once said: "The more clashing it is, the more that I like it!"

This statement should have been proven true by the Antwerp designer's patterned and flowery ode to spring ? a commanding show that mixed up wildly divergent textures, styles, cuts and shapes.

He presented ruffled 3-D flower appliques and floral prints mixed with blown-up Prince of Wales check, plaid, tartan and beaded denim. Those were pursued eccentrically down the catwalk by sheer organza shirts, metallic menswear jackets and oversized peplums.

Yet the preview, incredibly, was of the most harmonious Van Noten shows in some time, owing to its fine tonal color palette. Traditional tartans blended softly into a haze of faded orange, peach, rose, nude, russet, silver and duck egg blue.

It felt like spring was in the air.

DAMIR DOMA

Croatian-born designer Damir Doma went East in an ambitious show that included Russian Cossack garb, Oriental kimono-sleeve jackets and even white belted karate tops.

Tight, high-waisted looks and a peppering of leather Obi-belts were followed by baggier silhouettes with dropped centers of gravity. Colors ranged from black, brown and navy to turquoise blue and cobalt.

If there was one theme that brought cohesion to the motley ensemble it was this: deconstruction. Almost a signature style for any graduate of Belgium's avant-garde fashion capital Antwerp ? like Dries Van Noten ? Doma exposed paneling, buckles, zips and fastenings on his clothes.

"Of course I am avant-garde, I'm from Antwerp," Doma said backstage. "I just cut things up, break and put them together: A collage."

GARETH PUGH

"Hard femininity," was how Gareth Pugh described his show, inspired, he says, by the rawness of Latin American cockfighting.

Sure enough, black nappa kimono looks opened the collection swirling stiffly and authoritatively ? with one model in a two-foot mourning veil.

However, the raw shock-factor ? Pugh's signature ? was short-lived for once. It soon gave way to a series of softer, elegant and more mature looks in sweeping vermilion, black fringing and pale dove gray.

The Latin feel was captured in a series of textured 3-D ruffles reflecting a coiffed, full-breasted cock, ready for the fight.

The designer's introspection was tangible, from the simplicity of the decor to Rebekah del Rio's haunting a capella singing to the clean, highly wearable silhouettes. Could Wednesday's show have been a coming of age for London's enfant terrible?

"Some things happened to me recently," Pugh said. "Sometimes you just can't help changing, some things are out of control."

GUY LAROCHE

"I love Frank Gehry," Guy Laroche designer Marcel Morongiu said after his uber-refined collection, which channeled the famed U.S. architect's buildings.

What the collection pulled off was no small feat: Downsizing with panache the spirit of Gehry's sculptural lines and volumes to fit the svelte female form. Long silhouettes slinked by with panels that flapped stiffly and with on-trend angular cutouts ? replacing the house DNA's vibrant colors with streamlined elegance.

Another lofty reference was to Brazil's master architect Oscar Niemeyer ? whose landmark contemporary art museum in Rio that features bold central paneling was evoked by outfits with strapped or sexily exposed midriffs.

Sex appeal is from the waist and above and long is back ? the show seemed to declare.

In addition to the architecture master class, the Guy Laroche team also hit the science lab.

A fantastic new material was made especially for the show: A double crepe, silk and viscose Nutty Professor concoction that gave a curious stiffness to the clothes, including a show-stopping, knee-length, laser-cut navy coat.
