Florida Vs. Bowling Green: Jacoby Brissett And Jeff Driskel Will Both Start At QB, According To Insane Report

David Pingalore was first to report that Jacoby Brissett would start for Florida against LSU last year. With that out of the way: His Friday report that Jacoby Brissett and Jeff Driskel will both start simultaneously for Florida on Saturday against Bowling Green stretches credulity.

The Florida Gators are going to start both Quarterbacks tomorrow, Local 6 Sports Director David Pingalore learned Friday night.

According to Pingalore's Florida Gators sources, Jacoby Brissett and Jeff Driskel will be on the field the same time when the game starts against Bowling Green.

Pingalore, known for 11th-hour reports with little more than a fraction of truth to them, also writes three other important things:

1. Driskel will be used primarily in running situations while nursing his injured left non-throwing shoulder.
2. Driskel has looked sharper than Brissett in practice.
3. Will Muschamp will name a starter for good by the Tennessee game ? and it will be Driskel.

Pingalore's been right on a few things and wrong on more than a few things before, but it would be unbecoming of a journalistic outlet to run this report without believing in it, so it's reasonable to conclude that Pingalore's sources (plural, note) might actually know things.

Or, y'know, this could be entirely bullshit.

Still, even if Florida starts two quarterbacks for a play, expect that to be a less egregious use of the Florida quarterback position than starting Trey Burton against Florida State in 2010.

Frozen soda explodes, injures boy

A boy in China who tried to chill a soda in the freezer wound up with 38 stitches when the can exploded in his face, according to Rocket News 24. ?

The incident was publicized by the boy's mother on Sina Webo, a Chinese microblogging site similar to Twitter, in a purported effort to warn other families about the dangers of freezing carbonated beverages.

According to the boy's mother, he took an intact can of cola out of the freezer on the night of Aug. 25. The moment he popped the tab, the top blew out, propelling shards of aluminum into his face and sending him to the hospital, where he reportedly received 31 stitches on his face and 7 inside his mouth.

So what happened?

Attempts to speed-cool a soda often result in a busted hull of aluminum and a wall-to-wall coat of sticky slush on the inside of the freezer. A popular belief is that this is because water in the soda expands when it freezes, exceeds the can's carrying capacity, and blows it open.

But that's not the whole story. ?The boy would not have been hurt if the can had been filled with water alone.

"What's dangerous is the carbon dioxide gas," said Louis Bloomfield, a physicist at the University of Virginia. "Once it has been forced out of the water as the water crystallizes, the carbon dioxide accumulates in the small remaining space in the can and the pressure of that gas skyrockets."

The expansion of water as it freezes is important to soda detonation not because it puts pressure on the can but because it puts pressure on an increasingly cramped reservoir of gaseous C02, which can change volume more radically and store far more energy than pressurized ice.

But if the water had already frozen and created a pocket of pent-up CO2 capable of rupturing the can, why hadn't the Chinese boy's soda already exploded on its own in the freezer?

"The can was stressed to its limit and when he introduced new stresses while trying to pop the top, he evidently found the weak point," Bloomfield told Life's Little Mysteries. "Whereas many cans with tiny defects would already have burst at that point, this particular can was holding on especially long. It might have held out forever, had the boy not handled it."

Though Bloomfield guesses that the boy was "seriously unlucky," the clear lesson of his misfortune for the cautious and occasionally absentminded is to give sodas time to cool in the fridge.

Either that, or switch to canned tomato juice, which won't blow up in your face even if you freeze it.?

Caller hung up on University of Colorado minutes before shooting

By Keith Coffman

DENVER | Fri Aug 31, 2012 9:12pm EDT

DENVER (Reuters) - A caller who phoned the University of Colorado Hospital less than 10 minutes before a mass shooting that killed 12 people hung up without speaking, officials said on Friday, a day after the accused gunman's lawyer said he may have made such a call.

An attorney for James Holmes raised the call during a hearing on Thursday as she questioned university psychiatrist Dr. Lynne Fenton about her doctor-patient relationship with the former graduate student accused of carrying out the rampage at a midnight screening of the new Batman movie.

"It was a seven-second call and there was silence and then a hang-up," Brad Fixler, marketing director for the hospital, told Reuters. "But nobody that evening or morning called asking for Dr. Fenton or any other psychiatrist."

He characterized the call, which a switchboard operator answered, as "a hang-up call" made at 12:31 a.m. on July 20, just minutes before police said the first emergency calls from the theater were received at 12:39 a.m.

Holmes, a former neuroscience PhD student who dropped out of the University of Colorado in June, is accused of opening fire at a premiere of "The Dark Knight Rises" in Aurora, Colorado. Fifty-eight people were also wounded.

Prosecutors portray Holmes, 24, as a young man whose once promising academic career was in tatters after he failed oral exams in June and one of his professors suggested he may not have been a good fit for the competitive program.

Defense attorneys have said that he suffers from a mental illness and tried to get help before the shooting.

Legal experts say the call could become key in the case as defense lawyers attempt to show that Holmes may have been desperately seeking help.

The disclosure of the phone call surfaced during a hearing on whether a package containing a notebook sent to Fenton, who had treated Holmes in the month before the shooting rampage, is protected by psychiatrist-patient privilege.

Holmes' lawyers say the package and its contents are confidential and should not be seen by prosecutors.

Prosecutors argue that the psychiatrist-patient relationship had been terminated by the time of the shooting. Fenton testified during Thursday's hearing that her treatment of Holmes ended on June 11.

"Did you know that James Holmes called that number nine minutes before the shooting started?" defense attorney Tamara Brady asked Fenton, referring to a campus number noted on a form related to Holmes' mental health treatment.

Fenton replied that she did not know.
