Atlanta Predicted to See Severe Storms Late Thursday

A line of severe weather will be moving into the Atlanta area Thursday evening. Joanne Feldman of Fox 5 Atlanta says the main line of storms will hit the northwest portion of Georgia between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m., with storms making their way into metro Atlanta between 9 a.m. and 1 a.m.

The National Weather Service (NWS) says rainfall amounts will total 1 or 2 inches. With that rain, the metro Atlanta area can also expect frequent lightning, damaging wind, and large hail. The NWS is also not ruling out the possibility of tornadoes.

This is the same line of storms that caused injuries and damaged at least eight houses and a church in Arkansas on Wednesday. This system has held together for days, bringing hail and winds to Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas. The storm system also brought snow to Colorado, South Dakota, North Dakota, and Kansas.

Residents in Atlanta are asked to stay vigilant and take cover when severe weather approaches. Keep your radio and television on in case tornado watches or warnings are issued.

The Masters golf tournament is taking place in Augusta, 145 miles from Atlanta, this week. After the storms race through Atlanta, their track could take them right to Augusta. Golf play is expected to be completed at the Masters before the storms hit Thursday evening, though rain could soften the course and slow the greens for Friday's play.
