Police: elderly woman duped in home improvement scam - Abc27.com

YORK, Pa. (WHTM) -

Police say someone scammed an elderly homeowner out of money after offering to seal their driveway with leftover material from a job done at a neighbor's house.

Northern York County Regional Police say the person approached a home on the 2500 block of Mayfield Street in Manchester Township around dusk on Friday. The homeowner agreed to the project and a price; however, once the project was done the person came back and said they needed more money to cover the completed work.

A new price was negotiated and payment was made.?

National Center For the Prevention of Home Improvement Fraud advises homeowners to never set up payment terms in conjunction with completed stages of the job.

"If a contractor makes a mistake or says he needs more money from you, DON'T give it to him.? It's his responsibility to fix his error," their website says.

More information on how to prevent home improvement fraud can be found at www.ncphif.org.
