NYC fast-food workers demand better pay

22 hrs.

Occupy the drive-thru: Fast-food workers in New York City staged a walkout on Thursday to demand better pay and the right to unionize?in another recent example of labor stretching muscles made moribund by disuse.

Organizers?of the Fast Food Forward movement said they expected hundreds of workers would walk out or not show up for work at dozens of McDonald?s, Burger King and other fast-food chains.?

Late Thursday, Fast Food Forward, one of the organizations behind the effort, released a statement saying about 200 people had participated in the strike.

At one early?morning demonstration, roughly 75 percent of shift workers were outside protesting, leaving managers to staff the registers and preparation equipment, said Jonathan Westin, organizing director with New York Communities for Change, one of the groups coordinating the walkouts.

?Workers are sick and tired of making poverty wages,? despite working for multibillion-dollar corporations, he said. ?I don?t think this is a short-term fight.?

Joshua Williams, 28, works at?a Wendy's restaurant in Brooklyn and?told Reuters he planned to participate in the walkout. He said?he still earned minimum wage, despite working 30 to 40 hours a week for more than a year.

In seeking a $15 hourly wage and the right to unionize, the movement joined a growing conversation about the financial challenges faced by the working poor.

?During the recession there was the assumption that people should just get a job, any job... I think you see the movement towards unionization as a demand-side response, in a sense,? said Ellen Galinsky, president of the Families and Work Institute. ?Employees are saying, ?No, we want better jobs.??

The Fast Food Forward action, which is supported by the Service Employees International Union along with civil rights and community groups, comes less than a week after a union-backed effort to draw attention to wages and working conditions at Wal-Mart led to protests at stores across the country on Black Friday.?

Organization United for Respect at Walmart called on the nation?s largest retailer to pay a minimum $13 hourly wage. Sales associates there currently make an average of $8.81 an hour, according to third-party research cited by workers? rights groups.

Earlier this week, the National Domestic Workers Alliance released a report that found nearly a quarter of nannies, housekeepers and caregivers earn less than the state minimum wage, and 70 percent make less than $13 an hour.

?We must create a more equitable economic environment for all low-wage workers,? the?report said. ?It is difficult to advocate for the rights of domestic workers in an economic and political environment in which the rights of low-wage workers more broadly are so badly frayed.?

Advocates for higher wages say the focus on minimum and low-wage workers is important because there are more people earning less today. The National Employment Law Project found that about 20 percent of?jobs lost during the recession were?low-paying positions, but nearly 60 percent of the jobs?added since then.

?In my mind, if we?re going to reduce inequality in the United States, it?s going to have to address the low wages and lack of benefits in the restaurants and retail sectors,? said Annette Bernhardt, policy co-director at NELP. ?There?s a profound larger question being posed, which is how the American labor market is going to look in the 21st century.?

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, around 60 percent of workers who earned minimum wage or less last year worked in ?service occupations,? primarily food preparation and serving.

At more than double the current national?minimum wage of $7.25, the $15 sought by Fast Food Forward might seem like a pie-in-the-sky goal, but others are pushing to increase New York state's?minimum wage to $8.50 next year. According to the National Women?s Law Center, if the minimum wage rose at the pace of inflation, it currently would be $10.60.

The National Restaurant Association opposes this and other legislation to raise minimum wages. The position statement on its website says, ?Wage mandates are an ineffective way to reduce poverty and cause restaurant operators to make very difficult decisions to eliminate jobs, cut staff hours or increase prices.?

Richard Adams, a McDonald's franchise adviser, told Reuters $15 an hour would be an "insane increase" that would add as much as $2 to the price of menu items.

"The majority of McDonald's restaurants are owned and operated by independent business men and women who offer pay and benefits competitive within the quick service restaurant industry," the company said in a statement.

David Neumark, a professor of economics at University of California, Irvine, said campaigns to increase wages for minimum and low-wage workers miss the mark.

?A lot of the fast-food workers aren?t in poor families ? they?re just kids,? he said. ?Targeting low-income families through what they?re trying to accomplish is a really scattershot way to do it. Why should an owner... have to pay more to the kids of middle-class families??

Galinsky said higher wages are important, but companies also need to explore other ways to improve the experience of low-wage workers, since the jobs they are filling make up an increasing percentage of labor market demand.

?Traditionally, people who work in jobs like fast food or retail? have been seen as expendable, particularly in a time of economic insecurity,? she said. The institute?s research found that access to training and advancement opportunities, flexible schedules and supportive managers help to improve productivity and reduce turnover at companies that employ low-wage workers.

?There are things that employers can do, most of which don?t cost money, that could benefit employees and that could benefit their own organization,? she said. ?It?s a mindset change.?

Information from Reuters was included in this report.

Court fines Cyprus over 'missing' dead soldier

NICOSIA, Cyprus (AP) ? Andriani Palma says she feels cheated for every one of the 22 years she wasn't told her husband was killed during fighting in the summer of 1974 that split tiny Cyprus along ethnic lines.

Living with the hope that Charalambos Palmas might one day return to her and her children, she lived in a kind of suspended animation, unwilling to remarry and move on with her life.

"They denied me my youth, the joys of being young, they denied me everything," Andriani, who is now 65, said. "There was prejudice in those times. I couldn't take the kids places, because they didn't have a father ...We've lived a mockery all those years."

But on Thursday a court offered her some sense of justice by ordering the Cypriot government to pay ?324,000 ($417,668) in damages to her and two daughters, Kalliopi and Christina, for denying them the right to know for two decades.

"After so much struggle, I feel vindicated," she says. "It's hardly the money, but the moral satisfaction."

Army authorities buried then 28-year-old reservist Palmas along with some 30 other Greek Cypriot soldiers in a mass grave marked "unknown" at Lakatamia cemetery on Nicosia's outskirts shortly after the fighting stopped. The soldiers were killed in heavy fighting as invading Turkish troops advanced in the northern Nicosia suburb of Ayios Pavlos.

Turkey invaded after a coup by supporters of union with Greece. The war split the island into a breakaway Turkish Cypriot north where Turkey maintains 35,000 troops, and an internationally recognized Greek Cypriot south.

In its ruling, the court said the state failed to carry out a timely probe into Palmas' fate, even if it had evidence indicating that he was dead.

The court said it awarded punitive damages on top of general damages to underscore how seriously the human rights of the soldier's family were breached.

"Sufficient evidence has been presented which demonstrates that the republic evaded its obligation to inform relatives in a proper and timely fashion and so violated their right to the truth, condemning the plaintiffs to such hardship that it bordered on inhumane treatment," the court said in its ruling. "The republic's behavior toward the plaintiffs from 1974 until now was, at the very least, insulting."

Palmas' lawyer Achilleas Demetriades said it's the first time that a Cypriot court has awarded punitive damages in a missing persons case.

Attorney General Petros Clerides said the state is "seriously considering" appealing the ruling.

Cypriot authorities only confirmed to Andriani Palmas her husband's death in 1996, two years after she started receiving bits of information about his real fate. It was three years later that his remains were returned and after Andriani in a fit of despair went to the cemetery to dig her husband up on her own.

Andriani's oldest daughter Kalliopi, who was only 5 in 1974 said a photograph of her mother, sister and their children standing next to her father's remains is the only family portrait that they have.

Kalliopi said the stigma of growing up without a father figured prominently in her childhood. But that was eclipsed by the bitter awareness of having grown up in the offices of the very same officials who kept the truth from her, even as her family took part in countless missing persons demonstrations clutching a photograph of her dad.

"What annoyed me was that my father wasn't just another faceless missing person, he had a name, he was somebody," she said.

About 1,500 Greek Cypriots and 500 Turkish Cypriots were officially listed as missing in intercommunal fighting in the early 1960s and the Turkish invasion.

An exhumation and identification program by the U.N.-led Committee on Missing Persons has returned the identified remains of 264 Greek Cypriots and 66 Turkish Cypriots to their families since it began in 2006.

Photograph Amazing Motion Trails with the Right Combination of Subject, Light, and Camera MovementPhotograph Amazing Motion Trails with the Right Combination of Subject, Light, and Camera Movement We've seen how slow shutter speeds can create amazing light trails, star trails, and light paintings, but you can also produce beautiful images with regular subjects as well. Photographer Ben Von Wong explains:

Motion blurs are created through a combination of movement and long exposures. Essentially, you are capturing color and light for the duration that your sensor is exposed to light. This gives you three fundamental options: Either you move the light, you move your subjects?or you move your camera.

Utilizing these options (or a combination thereof) you can create some really amazing effects as demonstrated in the video above. For more information on how this works, check out Ben's full post over at DIY Photography.

The Jaguars claimed via waiver on Wednesday the contract of former Eagles defensive end Jason Babin.? The contract covers three more seasons.

Under a little-known quirk in the Collective Bargaining Agreement, Babin can become a free agent after the 2013 season ? if he wants.

Article 29, Section 1(a) of the CBA explains that vested veterans (i.e., players with four or more years of service) who are claimed on waivers after the trading deadline ?shall have the right to declare himself an Unrestricted Free Agent . . . at the end of the League Year following the League Year in which he is waived and awarded.?

For vested veterans who have no-trade clauses in their contracts, the ability to become a free agent applies at the end of the year in which he was claimed.? Per a league source, Babin doesn?t have a no-trade clause in his contract.? Which means that Babin will be able to become a free agent, if he chooses, in March 2014.

Until then, it?s safe to say (at least for now) that Babin has no qualms about playing for the Jaguars.? His Twitter page already has been updated to reflect that he?s a Jaguar, and he seems like a guy who would have no qualms about speaking his mind if he were not interested in playing in Jacksonville.

Of course, the Jaguars have the ability at any time to make Babin a free agent.? Since he already has received (after his 2008 release by the Seahawks) termination pay in the form of the balance of his base salary, the Jags can cut him at any time, without owing him any more money or taking a cap hit.

Babin is due to receive a base salary of $4.225 million in 2013, along with a $100,000 workout bonus.? His base salary increases to $6 million in 2014.

Household Loans, how do they matter in our economy? | Frank's ...

    ?

Hi all, this is Tony back.

If you have read my posts, you would notice that lots of them are closely related to ?household finance?. Today?s topic deals with a coherent issue, as I am telling you ?household loans?. As you have already read in my previous posts, the number of house poor is growing due to excessive amount of mortgage loans. To deal with this matter, a low interest rate is being introduced.

    ?

    ?

According to the Bank of Korea statistics, 47.30 percent of newly issued household loans are based on a fixed interest rate. The rate was for 11% in September 2010, 26.20% for September 2011, and lastly 47.30% this year. Along with this, the aggregate total ratio of fixed rate loans increased to 16.70%. This is the highest figure ever since they started being recorded.

    ?

    ?

What would be the reason for this phenomenon? The biggest reason is that the financial authorities placed emphasis on loans with fixed interest rates. Accordingly, monetary institutions are encouraged to promote fixed interest rates. However, this is not the only reason why households are looking for fixed interest rates for their financial products. One person in baking industry said in an interview, ?When the government announced this policy, it seemed that the fixed interest rate did not really matter much. However, with the downward pressure on policy interest rate, the fixed interest rate begins attracting more attention.

    ?

In June last year, Financial Services Commission (FSC) had announced ?Soft-Landing Measures of Household Debts?. However, till this February, the importance on household debt for fixed rate was set at less than 10% despite FSC?s Soft-Landing Measures of Household Debts. But as the Bank of Korea rolled back policy interest rate twice consecutively, the gravity on policy interest rate grew in a wide variation. This phenomenon marking down the policy interest rate seems to be more invigorated. One of the authorities in banking industry said, ?There is a possibility that the Bank of Korea will cut additional policy interest rate.If economy gets better by the next year, they will bring the interest rateback into the process of normalization (increasing the rate of interest).

Winter Weather ? Possible Homeowners and Umbrella Insurance ...

    5. desember - December 5It isn?t December yet, but Connecticut has already had its first tastes of winter snow.

Thankfully, it has melted fairly quickly, but that trend won?t last much longer.

We are likely to see more, heavier snow this winter, which means plenty of shoveling, snow blowing and de-icing. ?The Keating Agency wants to know, ?Are you ready??

    Be Shovel Ready

When the white stuff falls, it?s time to grab the shovel.? Remember to dress warmly but before you head outdoors, the video from Eight West News offers up suggestions for proper shoveling techniques.? As the doctor in the video says, make certain to pace yourself and use proper form.

    Watch Your Step!

Colder temperatures inevitably mean icy walkways.? This story from KSPR television in Missouri states that falls are the number one cause of injuries among children and adults at the local trauma center.

If someone is injured by a fall on your property, you could be liable for medical costs and more.? Having an Umbrella Policy in addition to your Homeowner Insurance can cover your legal expenses if you are sued.

In addition to clearing and salting walkways and driveways, some steps you can take to protect yourself from winter falls are:

?Assume that all wet, dark areas on pavements are slippery.

?Wear shoes or boots with non-slip rubber or neoprene with grooved soles for the best traction.

Use your vehicle for support when getting in and out of it.

Keep your hands out of your pockets so you can balance yourself, and catch yourself if you fall.

At the Keating Agency, we hope you will be safe this winter.? As your local independent insurance agent for 40+ years, we are here to answer your questions and help you choose the right insurance to protect all of the things that are important to you.

The Cure for Obesity: Fat? | BU Today | Boston University

Regions of activated BAT (brown adipose tissue) outlined in green in fused 18F-FDG- PET/CT image (coronal view). Photos courtesy of Megan Ruth

There are many reasons why people are obese. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which estimates that one-third of Americans are obese, attributes the epidemic to genes, diet, socioeconomic status, environment, and lifestyle, among other things. At BU, dozens of researchers are searching for a better understanding of the causes of, and for solutions to, a health problem associated with heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and certain types of cancer, and whose medical costs were $147 billion in 2008. In this four-part series, BU Today looks at their work in progress.

It?s as counterintuitive as counterintuition can be: could the breakthrough fix for fatness be found in?fat?

It turns out that all fat is not created equal. Brown fat, named for its color and found in small amounts in strange places like our backs and necks, burns calories instead of warehousing them. Until three years ago, no one even knew adults had brown fat. Researchers had found it in rodents and human babies, both of whom cannot shiver (which burns calories) and therefore need brown fat as a heat-maker to stay warm. Then they studied scans of adults in cold rooms and voil??grownups had brown fat, too.

So the purpose of brown fat is to help people to stay warm when it?s cold. But this calorie incinerator could be a potential weight-shedding wonder, too. Boston Medical Center?s Caroline Apovian and Megan Ruth find the potential so promising that Ruth and another colleague have pored over 1,100 PET scans?done at BMC between 2006 and 2009?to find appropriate subjects for research into brown fat.

Apovian?a School of Medicine professor and head of the BMC Nutrition and Weight Management Center?and Ruth, a BMC postdoctoral associate, are part of a team that devised a software program to quantify the amount of brown fat in the people who were scanned. They narrowed the field to 35 scans.

?What we?d like to do is figure out a way to activate that brown fat and have the white fat around it??the ordinary kind??make more brown fat,? says Apovian. She is hopeful that if they can trick the body into producing more brown fat, ?people won?t have to exercise, which nobody seems to want to do.?

Boston University BU obesity research, brown fat, Boston Medical Center, BMC nutrition and weight management center, Caroline Apovian Megan Ruth research

Comparison of 18F-FDG-PET/CT image (top) with algorithm-generated image (bottom) exemplifying BAT in supraclavicular region (coronal view). BAT appears bright white/yellow in 18F-FDG-PET/CT and green in computer-generated image (white=bone).

The work done by Apovian and her team complements research at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, where researchers engineered brown fat production in mice. They?re ?doing work in animals. We do human research,? Apovian says.

The first step in cracking the riddle of how to make brown fat is pinpointing and measuring how much you have to begin with. Enter the computer program, which allows the researchers to measure brown fat in the scans without the aid of a radiologist.

The BU researchers are seeking funding for their next step, which will test their software program on actual subjects rather than scans. For the subjects, it will be, quite literally, chilling work: the researchers will make them cold?they may stand on an ice block or don a bomb deactivation suit filled with cold water?allowing the program to measure brown fat before and after the onset of cold. ?The more obese you are, the less brown fat you have,? says Apovian. ?The more brown fat you have, the more calories you can burn.?It seems that there?s more brown fat in lean people, and so our hypothesis is that that?s why they?re lean. But we don?t know that.? She says it could be six months before they have the money in hand to proceed.

It?s too soon for us to cancel our gym memberships, though. ?In the next 10 years, we?re not curing the obesity epidemic,? Apovian says. ?We don?t know enough about brown fat. We may find that we can?t activate it. We may find that we can activate it, but it doesn?t contribute that much, because there?s not a lot of it. We may find that it causes cancer. This is just at the very beginning stages. Maybe in 50 years, we?ll have found a way to turn white fat into brown fat so that you can eat whatever you want, eat junk food, and still stay lean. But not now.?

The project?s other researchers are Thomas Szabo, a College of Engineering research professor, Gustavo Mercier, a MED assistant professor, and Tyler Wellman, an PhD candidate in the Department of Biomedical Engineering.

Next, in part four of our series, ?Exploring the Causes of Black Women?s Obesity.? Read part one, ?Deciphering the Body?s Healthy Message.? Read part two, ?Solving the Childhood Obesity Puzzle, One Piece at a Time.?

Lions' Suh gets traffic ticket in Detroit suburb

DETROIT (AP) ? Detroit Lions defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh was issued a traffic citation by a police officer who said Suh was driving fast and passing cars from the right lane of a suburban Detroit roadway.

The Lathrup Village officer gave Suh the ticket on Nov. 15 for driving without due care and caution, but Police Chief William Armstrong told The Associated Press on Tuesday he was not sure the citation would hold up.

The chief was awaiting a call back from the city attorney to discuss the case, which he said was "in limbo."

"From my bird's eye view, taking a quick glance at it, I'd say the charge doesn't fit," Armstrong said after watching video footage of Suh's driving that day. "Just looking at the tape, Mr. Suh was traveling faster than the cars around him, but I don't think it was to the extent of driving without due care and caution."

Messages seeking comment were left for representatives of Suh and the Lions. Word of the traffic stop was reported Monday by Detroit-area TV station WJBK.

Armstrong's comments came a day after the NFL announced it wouldn't suspend Suh for a low blow he delivered to Houston Texans quarterback Matt Schaub on Thanksgiving. Suh was on his chest after being taken down by an offensive lineman and extended his left foot to hit Schaub below the belt.

Suh, 25, was suspended for two games a year ago after he was ejected for stomping on the right arm of Green Bay offensive lineman Evan Dietrich-Smith, also during a game on Thanksgiving. He has been fined in previous seasons for roughing up quarterbacks.

Suh, whom the Lions selected with the second overall pick out of Nebraska in 2010, has been involved in several traffic incidents over the past year.

He was ticketed for speeding, improperly signaling and not carrying proof of insurance during a March stop in his hometown of Portland, Ore. Police said he was driving a BMW 91 mph in a 55 mph zone.

In December 2011, Suh lost control of a car and crashed into a drinking fountain and tree in Portland. A woman has filed a civil lawsuit seeking $1 million from Suh in the crash.

He also was involved in a traffic accident last month in Dearborn. Police in the Detroit suburb said the accident was minor and fault could not be determined. When Suh played at Nebraska he pleaded guilty to negligent driving and paid a $60 fine after crashing into three parked cars.

Rice Returns to Hill to Meet with Collins, Corker

Following a rocky meeting with her strongest Republican critics in the Senate on Tuesday, U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice plans to meet with two more Republican senators on Wednesday.

Rice will sit with Sens. Susan Collins of Maine and Bob Corker of Tennessee on Wednesday. Corker is next in line to be ranking member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

?She always delivers the party line, the company line, whatever the talking points are,? Corker said, according to the Associated Press. ?I think most of us hold the secretary of state and secretary of treasury to a whole different level. We understand that they're going to support the administration, but we also want to know that they are independent enough, when administration is off-base, that they are putting pressure. I think that's what worries me most about Rice."

Rice has been widely reported as President Obama's top choice for secretary of state, and the president has fiercely defended her amid a firestorm of criticism over her statements explaining the Sept. 11 terrorist attack in Libya.

After their meeting with Rice, Republican Sens. John McCain, Lindsey Graham and Kelly Ayotte said they were more disturbed than they were before the meeting. Ayotte said on CBS that she would place a hold on the nomination if Rice were tapped for secretary of state.

?We are significantly troubled by many of the answers that we got and some that we didn't get concerning evidence that was overwhelming leading up to the attack on our consulate,? McCain said after the morning meeting with Rice.

On Tuesday, the White House and several Democrats on the Hill defended Rice against what they said was unfair criticism.

?There are no unanswered questions about Ambassador Rice's appearance on Sunday shows and the talking points that she used for those appearances that were provided by the intelligence community,? White House spokesman Jay Carney said. ?Those questions have been answered.?

Further, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., called the criticism ?outrageous,? saying the real questions that need answering surround how to prevent any further attacks on diplomats abroad.

?The personal attacks against Ambassador Rice by certain Republican senators have been outrageous and utterly unmoored from facts and reality,? Reid said on Tuesday, according to AP.

Following her meeting with the three senators of Tuesday, Rice also sat down with retiring Sen. Joe Lieberman, the chairman of the Senate Homeland Security Committee.

If Rice were to be nominated as Secretary of State Hillary Clinton?s successor, she would only need five Republicans to reach 60 votes and cloture for the nomination.

5 Reasons Why Women Have Affairs

There can be little other news that is more devastating to man, than to discover that his wife has cheated on him and has been having an affair with another man. The very thought of another man sexually penetrating his wife, or his wife enthusiastically giving oral sex to her new lover can make the jilted husband feel sick to the stomach for days, even weeks on end.
Unfortunately, an increasing number of men have been contacting us here at The Modern Man, trying to seek answers to the questions, ?Why did my wife have an affair? Why did she cheat on me? What causes women to have affairs? What did I do so wrong to deserve it? ? So, I?m going to share my advice here in a dedicated article on why women have affairs.

The Rules of the Game Have Changed

Relationships are not like how they used to be in the early 1900s or even a few decades ago, for that matter. Today?s women are constantly being bombarded with TV sitcoms and Hollywood movies telling them that if they are unhappy, they should get a divorce or have an affair. Unlike in the past, a woman isn?t surrounded by a society that is telling her, or even forcing her to remain married no matter what. A woman in 1900 for example, would feel like the ?scum of the Earth? for committing such a disloyal act as having an affair. However, when it comes to women of today?s generation, unless her man is able to create and maintain the right relationship dynamic, she will often act on what she believes to be valid reasons for an affair and she will feel fairly comfortable doing it.

At The Modern Man, we believe that if you get married, you should stay married. Marriage isn?t something you ?try,? it?s something you do for real. It?s for keeps. If there are problems in your relationship, you should work to fix them rather than giving up. In our opinion, affairs are never justifiable. If a relationship is unrecoverable and you absolutely have to break up, both people should, out of common decency, maturity and respect for each other, wait until that is done before they find someone new. However, to avoid an affair or break up even happening in the first place, here at The Modern Man we teach men how to create and maintain the right relationship dynamic, so affairs never become ?necessary? for a woman. It is much easier to avoid an affair occurring in the first place, than to try and save a devastated relationship after one has happened.

Here are some of the reasons why a woman will want to have an affair behind her husband?s back.

Reason One: Arguments That Don?t Lead to Change

When arguments become on-going between you and rarely a day passes without some degree of emotional upset in your relationship, a woman is going to start thinking of why she puts up with it. Women of past generations had to put up with it and try to work through it, even if the husband responded badly and his behavior got worse as a result. These days, if a man isn?t being the perfect man like the ones depicted in TV sitcoms and movies, it has unfortunately become socially acceptable for a woman to leave, or worse, have an affair behind his back.

Men who are successful in their relationships with women do not throw their hands up in the air in the face of an argument or blame the woman for all the arguing. When faced with a problem in life, a real man faces it head on and figures out how to fix it. Things are not always going to run smoothly in a relationship every hour and every day, but couples in successful relationships get through rough patches by facing problems and looking for ways to fix them, not running away and hiding from them. As a man, it?s your job to take the lead on fixing the problem. If you don?t know how to fix it, learn.

Why do the arguments happen in the first place? Read this article, ?Why Am I Always Arguing With My Girlfriend?? to understand what leads a woman to start arguments with you and how to turn them into an opportunity to deepen your love, attraction and respect for each other, rather than pushing you further apart.

Reason Two: She Doesn?t Feel Sexy Around You Anymore

There are some very sneaky men out there who prey on married women and women in long term relationships. They live by the old old saying, ?Show me a beautiful woman in a long-term relationship and I?ll show you a man who is bored of having sex with her.? To protect your relationship against these opportunistic men, you need to ensure that your woman feels increasingly sexy around you. Most men are able to make their woman feel sexy during the initial part of the relationship, where there is plenty of romance and natural lust. However, as they progress through the stages of a relationship, they are clueless as to how to retain that or build on it.

In The Modern Relationship, I explain the secrets to not only maintaining the degree to which your woman feels sexy around you, but how to increase it. When your woman feels sexy around you, she is going to be more open to sex and to doing ?sexual favors? for you, if you know what I mean. Making her feel sexy and sexually confident around you, also means that she will continually make an effort to look good for you. You?ll find that she wears sexier clothes, makes more of an effort to stay in shape and is generally much more fun to have sex with.

Reason Three: Bad Sex or Lack of Sex

Once again, most guys are able to please their woman fairly well during the initial stages of a relationship. However, once familiarity has set in and they fail to increase the degree to which a woman feels sexy around them, the sex can become boring and predictable. The secret to avoiding this is to make your woman see you as her ?sex god,? so to speak. To her, no other man is necessary because to be sexed by you touches her and satisfies her on the deepest levels of her being.

Now, don?t get me wrong here. I?m not talking about spending loads of hours on tantric sex, or any other ?Sensitive New Age Guy? rubbish like that. I?m talking about deeply penetrating your woman?s body and mind as you have sex with her, without needing to spend time on foreplay or doing unnecessary things like dressing up and role playing. You don?t need any of that when you know how to deeply penetrate her body and mind during sex. It doesn?t matter if you do it for 5 minutes or 30 minutes; when you sex a woman right, she will be the best girl you?ve ever had in your life. You tell her to make you a coffee and she will jump at the opportunity to please you. Tell her to give you oral sex while you watch TV and she will feel LUCKY to be doing it.

However, if the sex is boring or if there is a lack of pleasurable sex, modern women (especially those who watch TV sitcoms that glamorize affairs and divorce, rather than condemning it) will often start thinking that maybe an ?exciting affair? will liven up their life again. Unfortunately, when a woman consults with her friends, they will often encourage it and even help make it happen. The best strategy to protect your relationship in the modern world, is to become the type of man that women desperately want to be with. You can no longer just be an ?okay option? or maintain a boring, sexless relationship. If the woman isn?t feeling fulfilled, she is more likely to have affair or just up and leave you.

So, how do you create the right relationship dynamic and how do you penetrate a woman?s body AND mind during sex? It?s about being a masculine man, being present and making her feel like a feminine woman. Watch Better Than a Bad Boy to learn how. When you have sex with women in the way I suggest, you will be amazed at how much good treatment you?ve been missing out on from women. The truth is, a woman WANTS to be in a position in the relationship where she feels lucky to be having sex with you. If you don?t give her that gift and make her feel lucky like that, you?re leaving her wide open to being preyed on by men who seek out unhappy women for easy sex.

    Reason Four: Lack of Excitement

One of the traits that women find most attractive in men is unpredictability. I?m not referring to wild unpredictability where you do crazy or dangerous things, I?m talking about interesting unpredictability where you are not boring! I teach guys how to be unpredictable when talking to women for the first time, on the phone and on dates in The Flow and I explain how to do it in a relationship in The Modern Relationship.

All relationships go through stages and there can be no doubt that the early stages of infatuation with one another make everything about the relationship feel extremely exciting. It can feel fun and exciting to be even sitting together on the couch, cuddled up and watching TV?but, after a while it will stop feeling fun if you don?t maintain and grow the love and attraction you feel for each other. As the relationship grows, the ?love rush? of the early days is replaced with a different kind of emotional connection and this is when some women can slip into thinking that something is missing in the relationship. An affair is then used as a way of finding out if the something that?s missing can be found in someone else.

Reason Five: You?re Not Being a Man For Her

Let?s face it; if a woman is extremely happy in her relationship with her man, she?s not going to be interested in having an affair. Generally speaking, a woman will seek to have an affair when she isn?t happy and thinks that another man will provide the happiness she is lacking. As you may know, we are each responsible for our own feelings of happiness and shouldn?t solely rely on another person (or people) to make us happy. Much of it has to come from within, from our purpose in life, the love we share with others and our perception of the world around us. However, you can?t rely on a woman to know that and live by it. Your woman may think that happiness is found in a man, in buying shoes and in eating cake, who knows!

As a man, you need to take personal responsibility for the relationship you have with your woman. You can literally guide her into happiness, love and total surrender to you by being a man for her. The more of a man you are and the more you guide her into being a true, feminine woman, the happier both of you will be. These days, a lot of men unknowingly guide their women into depression, unhappiness and lack of desire because they simply don?t understand how to ?be the man? in a relationship.

Men and Women Have Changed, But Are Still the Same

Although modern women have become more confident, independent and in a way, more masculine in their behavior and thinking due to entering the workforce and taking on bigger roles, changing attitudes in society and the after effects of the feminist movement ? women still want you to be a man. Women are not the new men, they just have more voice, choice and freedom. Deep down, under the superficial layer of masculinity they have to put on to survive in the modern world, they are still just girls?and want to be treated that way behind closed doors.

These days, most men are unsure how to behave around the confident, new aged women and unfortunately, they end up looking to TV for the answers. However, when a modern man watches TV, he?ll often see TV commercials where husbands are depicted as clumsy, sex-starved idiots who are trying to do whatever they can to please their wife, who always seems to be on the verge of hitting him across the head with something. Why do they show this stuff on advertisements? Well, they can?t have men treating women that way, can they?

Companies advertising their products cannot depict women as wanting to be bent over the couch by their husband, as a reward for her doing the housework or cooking a good meal. Yet, the truth is, women do want to be in a position where they are rewarded for their good behavior. The better they behave and the more they please you, the more of your attention, love and sex they will get. That?s what women want. Yet, if you believe what you see on TV commercials, you?ll end up thinking that you will get more sex, love and respect from your woman if you do the housework and stay out of her way?or else she?ll get mad!

If you want to get a real education on how to be a man, watch Better Than a Bad Boy. Trying to learn how to be a man by watching TV sitcoms, Hollywood movies and the odd TV commercial is only going to cause you more confusion, frustration and problems now and in the long run. If you don?t want to invest years of your life and loads of your time and money into a relationship, only to have a woman turn around one day and say, ?I need to tell you something. I?ve been having an affair. I am in love with another man? then get educated and enjoy a relationship the way it should be enjoyed. That being, where the love, respect and attraction you feel for each other GROWS rather than fades away into arguments, infidelity and divorce.

The Double Standard of Forced Treatment | World of Psychology

The Double Standard of Forced TreatmentForced treatment for people with mental illness has had a long and abusive history, both here in the United States and throughout the world. No other medical specialty has the rights psychiatry and psychology do to take away a person?s freedom in order to help ?treat? that person.

Historically, the profession has suffered from abusing this right ? so much so that reform laws in the 1970s and 1980s took the profession?s right away from them to confine people against their will. Such forced treatment now requires a judge?s signature.

But over time, that judicial oversight ? which is supposed to be the check in our checks-and-balance system ? has largely become a rubber stamp to whatever the doctor thinks is best. The patient?s voice once again threatens to become silenced, now under the guise of ?assisted outpatient treatment? (just a modern, different term for forced treatment).

This double standard needs to end. If we don?t require forced treatment for cancer patients who could be cured by chemotherapy, there?s little justification for keeping it around for mental illness.

Charles H. Kellner, MD unintentionally provides a perfect example of this double-standard in this article about why he believes electroconvulsive therapy (ECT, also known as shock therapy) shouldn?t be held to the same standards as FDA-approved drugs or other medical devices:

Yes, ECT has adverse effects, including memory loss for some recent events, but all medical procedures for life-threatening diseases have adverse effects and risks. Severe depression is every bit as lethal as cancer or heart disease. It is inappropriate to allow public opinion to determine medical practice for a psychiatric illness; this would never happen for an equally serious nonpsychiatric illness.

And yet, strangely enough, if someone were dying from cancer or heart disease, they have an absolute right to refuse medical treatment for their ailment. So why is it that people with mental disorders can have that similar right taken away from them?

People who?ve just been told they have cancer are often not in their ?right? minds. Many people never recover from that information. Some rally, undergo treatment, and live a long and happy life. Others feel like they?ve been given a death sentence, resign themselves to the disease, and refuse medical treatment.

As long as they do it in the quiet of their home, nobody seems to much care.

Not so with mental disorders. No matter what the concern ? depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, heck, even ADHD ? you could be forced into treatment against your will if a doctor thinks it may help you. Technically, he or she must also be concerned about your willingness to live, but isn?t an oncologist also concerned about their patient?s will to live?

I?ve wrestled with this double standard all my professional life. Early in my career, I believed professionals had the right to force a person to undergo treatment. I rationalized this position ? as most psychiatrists and psychologists do ? arguing to myself that since many mental disorders can cloud our judgment, it seems like something that may be appropriate from time to time.

I was never fully comfortable with this idea, though, because it seemed completely antithetical to the basic human right of freedom. Shouldn?t freedom override the right to treat someone, especially against their will?

After talking with hundreds of people over the years ? patients, clients, survivors, people in recovery, advocates, and even colleagues who voluntarily underwent psychiatric treatment procedures such as ECT ? I?ve come to a different point of view. (Luckily, it appears ECT treatment is in decline and may someday go the way of the dodo bird.)

Forced treatment is wrong. Just as no doctor would ever force someone to undergo cancer treatment against their will, I can no longer back the rationalizations that justify forcing a fellow human being to undergo treatment for their mental health concern without their consent.

As a society, we?ve shown time and time again that we cannot devise a system that won?t be abused or used in ways that it was never intended. Judges simply don?t work as check for forced treatment, because they don?t have any reasonable basis on which to actually rest their judgment in the short time they?re given to make a determination.

The power to force treatment ? whether through the old-style commitment laws or the new-style ?assisted outpatient treatment? laws ? cannot be trusted to others to wield compassionately or as an option of last resort.

What should be good enough for the rest of medicine should be good enough for mental health concerns. If an oncologist can?t force a cancer patient to undergo life-saving chemotherapy, there?s little that can justify our use of this type of power in psychiatry and mental health.

It?s a double-standard in medicine that has gone on long enough, and in modern times, has outlived its purpose ? if it ever even had one.

New review associates vitamin D with lower rates of tooth decay

New review associates vitamin D with lower rates of tooth decay [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 27-Nov-2012

    University of Washington

Studies of children in several countries linked vitamin D to a 50 percent reduction in the incidence of dental caries

A new review of existing studies points toward a potential role for vitamin D in helping to prevent dental caries, or tooth decay.

The review, published in the December issue of Nutrition Reviews, encompassed 24 controlled clinical trials, spanning the 1920s to the 1980s, on approximately 3,000 children in several countries. These trials showed that vitamin D was associated with an approximately 50 percent reduction in the incidence of tooth decay.

"My main goal was to summarize the clinical trial database so that we could take a fresh look at this vitamin D question," said Dr. Philippe Hujoel of the University of Washington, who conducted the review.

While vitamin D's role in supporting bone health has not been disputed, significant disagreement has historically existed over its role in preventing caries, Hujoel noted. The American Medical Association and the U.S. National Research Council concluded around 1950 that vitamin D was beneficial in managing dental caries. The American Dental Association said otherwise based on the same evidence. In 1989, the National Research Council, despite new evidence supporting vitamin D's caries-fighting benefits, called the issue "unresolved."

Current reviews by the Institute of Medicine, the U.S. Department of Human Health and Service and the American Dental Association draw no conclusions on the vitamin D evidence as it relates to dental caries.

"Such inconsistent conclusions by different organizations do not make much sense from an evidence-based perspective," Hujoel said. The trials he reviewed increased vitamin D levels in children through the use of supplemental UV radiation or by supplementing the children's diet with cod-liver oil or other products containing the vitamin.

The clinical trials he reviewed were conducted in the United States, Great Britain, Canada, Austria, New Zealand and Sweden. Trials were conducted in institutional settings, schools, medical and dental practices, or hospitals. The subjects were children or young adults between the ages of 2 and 16 years, with a weighted mean age of 10 years.

Hujoel's findings come as no surprise to researchers familiar with past vitamin D studies. According to Dr. Michael Hollick, professor of medicine at the Boston University Medical Center, "the findings from the University of Washington reaffirm the importance of vitamin D for dental health." He said that "children who are vitamin D deficient have poor and delayed teeth eruption and are prone to dental caries."

The vitamin D question takes on greater importance in the light of current public health trends. Vitamin D levels in many populations are decreasing while dental caries levels in young children are increasing.

"Whether this is more than just a coincidence is open to debate," Hujoel said. "In the meantime, pregnant women or young mothers can do little harm by realizing that vitamin D is essential to their offspring's health. Vitamin D does lead to teeth and bones that are better mineralized."

Hujoel added a note of caution to his findings: "One has to be careful with the interpretation of this systematic review. The trials had weaknesses which could have biased the result, and most of the trial participants lived in an era that differs profoundly from today's environment. "

Hujoel has joint appointments as a professor in the University of Washington School of Dentistry's Department of Oral Health Sciences and as an adjunct professor of epidemiology in the UW School of Public Health. His research has concentrated on nutrition with a focus on low-carbohydrate diets, harmful effects of diagnostic radiation, and evidence-based methodology and applications.

His research has also covered sugar substitutes, the use of antibiotics in the treatment of periodontal disease, and cleft lip and cleft palate. He has also studied the link between dental disease and systemic disease, as well as trends in disease prevalence.

Fiscal cliff notes for the budget shell game

    By Walter Shapiro

It was the political equivalent of discovering more Americans were secretly watching British snooker telecasts than pro football. According to a recent national survey by the Pew Research Center, more Americans claimed to be very closely following the budget negotiations to avert the fiscal cliff than were engrossed in the soap opera that forced CIA director David Petraeus to resign.

A few possible explanations for these anomalous poll results:

    1) A sex scandal involving a revered four-star general is inherently boring. 2) Americans mistakenly assume that the fiscal cliff is part of an extreme skateboarding competition, not shorthand for the looming expiration of the Bush-era tax cuts and possible across-the-board spending cuts. 3) Voters have been panicked into believing that the president and Congress must solve the country?s financial problems by the Dec. 31 or we instantly become an international basket case.

In truth, the fiscal cliff is nothing more than an arbitrary deadline created by Congress to be replaced with a dramatic flourish and, yes, another arbitrary deadline set a bit further in the future. It?s a shell game created by political con men who have come to believe their own cons.

So, relax about the over-hyped New Year?s Eve countdown for budget negotiations. Results matter, not the timetable. But even without the Petraeus-related distractions, it?s hard to separate the real from the fake, the legitimate fiscal issues from the political posturing.

So here is my version of Fiscal Cliff Notes:

Fact: All comparisons to Greece, Spain, the Roman Empire or the Duchy of Grand Fenwick are ludicrously exaggerated.

?The Road to Greece? might have been the title of a Mitt Romney campaign biopic since the former GOP presidential hopeful used the imagery so often. And during an interview Sunday with ABC?s ?This Week,? South Carolina Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham used the same rhetorical excess about the American economy reduced to offering budget tours of the Acropolis.

In fact, the European fiscal crisis is far different from what the U.S. faces.

Debtor nations like Greece and Spain do not fully control their economies because they are lashed to German austerity policies through the common currency, the Euro. That means those countries do not have their own currencies to devalue, which would spur exports. Nor do they have a central bank like the U.S. Federal Reserve which would provide liquidity for their banking systems.

The United States does have long-term fiscal challenges and years of unsustainable trillion-dollar budget deficits. But our problems are largely due to the fact that we are still groping our way out of the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression. Slow but persistent economic growth (the White House projects that unemployment will not drop below 6 percent until 2017) will reduce many budgetary problems.

Global confidence in the American economy is reflected in the near record low interest rates available on 10-year and 30-year Treasury bonds. Investors around the world are willing to tie up their money for 30 years in Treasuries for the paltry interest rate of 2.8 percent.

Fact: Even if all the Bush tax cuts expire on Jan. 1, no one will instantly be paying higher income tax rates.

The Wall Street Journal ran a story the other day titled ?Most Households Face Fiscal Cliff,? suggesting almost every American family would pay more if the Bush tax cuts expired. As an example, the Journal pointed to a married couple making about $25,000 a year whose annual income tax bill would leap from zero to about $1,400.

While the tax calculations are accurate, the likelihood of this happening is about on par with an asteroid destroying the Capitol. No one in government wants the Bush tax cuts to expire for anyone earning less than $250,000 a year, so a hypothetical family scraping by on $25,000 a year would not pay a penny more in income taxes under anyone?s plan.

But what if Congress misses the Dec. 31 deadline to extend the Bush tax cuts?

This is the part of the shell game. The Treasury Department has wide discretion in the pace by which it instructs employers to adjust their income-tax withholding rates. Chances are Treasury would do nothing in January to change the rates for anyone earning less than $250,000, meaning a temporary tax increase for those wage earners would be a fiscal abstraction rather than a real-world wallet pinch. And when Congress and the president cut the inevitable tax deal, the new, lower rates would be retroactive to January 1.

Make no mistake: Some people will see their taxes increase. For the past two years, most Americans have benefited from a 2 percent reduction in their payroll taxes ? a cut designed to stimulate the economy in a period of high unemployment. But the payroll tax cut was always supposed to be temporary rather than a permanent rate adjustment. While nothing is certain, chances are payroll taxes will revert to their normal levels next year.

Then there is the so-called ?sequester? that is supposed to slash $100 billion from the budget if lawmakers do not reach an epic Grand Bargain on the deficit. For all the alarmist talk that this will reduce the U.S. Navy to bathtub levels and shred the social safety net, the sequester is another easily disarmed fiscal booby-trap.

In fact, Congress will (shocking revelation ahead) probably extend the deadline. And even if lawmakers temporize, don?t expect to see generals and admirals on the unemployment line. The automatic cuts are evenly divided between the Pentagon budget and domestic spending for a total of about $8 billion per month and every federal agency has been preparing for these potential cuts.

Across-the-board cuts, to be sure, are a foolish way to impose budgetary discipline since there is no rational case to reduce funding for embassy security after the Benghazi raid or slash FEMA spending in the wake of Superstorm Sandy. But it is hard to believe that even a delay of a month or two will ultimately matter except at the margins.

Fact: There is no $4 trillion magic number that the president and Congress must hit to prove their long-term deficit reduction plan is credible.

Somehow $4 trillion has become the gold standard to measure deficit hawk seriousness. That was the rough number in the 2010 Simpson-Bowles deficit reduction plan and it carried over into President Obama?s abortive 2011 negotiations with Republican House Speaker John Boehner.

Throughout the 2012 presidential campaign, Obama talked about his own $4 trillion ?balanced plan.? But that was partly sleight of hand: The Obama road map includes $1 trillion in savings from a 2011 congressional deal and another mythical $848 billion from the end of the Iraqi and Afghan wars. In short, his plan reflected previous agreements and military spending that had already been discontinued.

Fact: Everyone in Washington wants credit for tackling the deficit but no one wants to be blamed for causing pain.

As recounted by Bob Woodward in ?The Price of Politics,? a dramatic moment in the 2011 Obama-Boehner negotiations came when the two men battled over boosting the age to qualify for Medicare. Boehner wanted the age change to take effect in 2017 while Obama wanted to hold out until 2022.?

That is Washington in a nutshell ? both men wanted to postpone the pain until after they retired from office. They wanted to bask in the glory of reaching a Grand Bargain on the deficit with all the complications reserved for a future president and House speaker.

In a sense, it is budgetary arithmetic as seen through the prism of Lewis Carroll. In Through the Looking-Glass, the White Queen promised Alice jam every other day. ?The rule is,? the Queen explained, ?jam tomorrow and jam yesterday ? but never jam today.?

Just like budget cuts and tax increases ? always tomorrow and yesterday.
