Peoria, Ill. ? Today, citizens involved with Food & Water Watch?s ?Let Me Decide? campaign hosted a GE-Free Soup Kitchen at the Salvation Army. Soup and bread were served to those in need of a healthy meal. All of the ingredients in today?s meal were free of genetically engineered (GE) ingredients and donated by local farmers, businesses and those who support the labeling of GE foods. Lyndon Harts, local farmer and director of Good Earth Food Alliance, donated large amounts of GE-free produce to the meal. He said, ?I wanted to be able to help people. When you?re a farmer and you have a good year, you want to share with others.? Lyndon is concerned about people?s health when it comes to GE foods. ?It?s important that people know what they?re eating. If there isn?t an issue with GE foods, there should be no opposition to label them. It should be up to the people to decide if they want to eat GE foods or not,? said Lyndon.

Food & Water Watch is working to pass legislation requiring the labeling of GE foods in Illinois because there are no long-term studies to prove that GE foods are safe, yet the Food & Drug Administration still doesn?t require the industry to tell consumers what they?re eating. Hannah Offutt, one of the event organizers, said, ?Everyone deserves to have a choice about whether or not to eat GE food.?

Over the past few months, Peoria citizens involved with the ?Let Me Decide? campaign have signed petitions, made phone calls, written letters and formed coalitions of community organizations to urge Senator David Koehler to champion the labeling of GE foods. Senator Koehler attended the event today to show his support for the issue, and community members are calling on him to introduce GE labeling legislation next spring. ?We?re excited that Senator Koehler was re-elected because we know he can be a leader in making GE labeling the law in Illinois. He is our gateway to getting this done,? said Kaleena Otey-Merch, one of the event organizers.

The ?Let Me Decide? campaign is part of a nationwide campaign to label genetically engineered foods and give citizens back the power to choose what they are eating. The campaign kicked off in 10 cities nationwide in September. For more information, visit foodandwaterwatch.org.
