Obama halts delivery of F-16s to Egypt amid unrest

By Phil Stewart and Matt Spetalnick

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama has halted the delivery of four F-16 fighter jets to Egypt, U.S. officials said on Wednesday, in the strongest signal yet of U.S. impatience with Egypt's armed forces after its toppling of President Mohamed Mursi.

The decision appears to underscore deepening U.S. concern about the course taken by the Arab world's most populous country, reeling from violent street clashes following Mursi's July 3 overthrow.

Still, Obama administration officials offered no hint that the decision on the F-16s signaled a shift in broader U.S. policy on aid to Egypt. Washington still has not decided whether to call Mursi's overthrow a coup, something that would legally trigger a cut-off in U.S. assistance.

However, suggesting mounting impatience with Egyptian generals' handling of the situation after Mursi's ouster, an administration official said one of the main objectives was to press the military-led government in Cairo to "move forward and get this democratic transition correct."

U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel informed Egypt's military chief, General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, of Obama's decision to halt the delivery of the F-16s in a phone call on Wednesday, the Pentagon said.

"Given the current situation in Egypt, we do not believe it is appropriate to move forward at this time with the delivery of F-16s," Pentagon spokesman George Little said, referring to the situation on the ground as "fluid."

Sisi has called for mass rallies on Friday to give him a mandate to tackle surging violence, fanning fears within Mursi's Muslim brotherhood of a military crackdown. The Muslim Brotherhood has warned of possible civil war.

Sporadic street clashes in recent days have killed more than 100. An overnight bomb attack on a police station north of Cairo killed one person and wounded two dozen.

BRIGHT STAR TO GO AHEAD

Obama's decision came two weeks after Reuters reported U.S. plans to go ahead with the delivery of the F-16s, despite Mursi's removal.

The Pentagon on Wednesday stressed the importance of ties with Egypt's armed forces and said there was no freeze on overall military assistance, which totals $1.3 billion a year.

This year's Bright Star military exercise with Egypt is still scheduled to go ahead as planned, for example, it said.

"It shouldn't be seen as distancing ourselves from the military," the Obama administration official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Egypt has been one of the world's largest recipients of U.S. aid since it signed a 1979 peace treaty with Israel.

It was the first Arab country to buy F-16s, widely viewed as a symbol of political and security ties with Washington. U.S.-Egyptian co-production of the M1A1 Abrams battle tank has also been a key part of U.S. assistance.

Obama administration officials played down any connection between the decision on the F-16s and the White House and State Department review of whether to call Mursi's overthrow a coup.

The foot-dragging by the administration has been viewed in Egypt as tacit support for military's overthrow of Mursi.

"The bottom line is, as we've been saying all along, you had tens of millions of people who basically felt like this was the popular will of the people," the Obama administration official said.

"But to be fair, you have tens of millions of people who feel there was an election, Mursi won ... It's not a black-and-white issue on either side."

Lockheed Martin, which builds the jets and is the Pentagon's biggest supplier, declined comment on the issue.

For fiscal year 2013, which ends in September, the United States had already disbursed $650 million in military aid to Egypt as of July 10. An additional $585 million was pending.

An additional eight F-16s are due to be delivered in December. It was not clear whether those deliveries had been suspended as well.

Microsoft mocks iPad in latest Surface RT advert despite near $1bn stock write-downs

Microsoft has taken to poking fun at Apple?s iPad in the latest Microsoft Surface RT advert, despite the Windows 8 tablet forcing the company into $900 million worth of stock write-downs.

Although having confirmed nearly $1 billion worth of Surface based stock write-downs in its latest quarterly product call, Microsoft has had no qualms in bashing the market leading iPad while attempting to promote a number of features on the ailing Surface RT tablet.

Mimicking the voice of Apple?s Siri service, the Microsoft Surface RT advert shows the iPad bemoaning its limited features array, with the tablet?s lack of USB connection options, physical keyboard and integrated stand all coming in for criticism.

Recent figures have suggested Microsoft has sold just 260,000 Surface RT tablets to date, with stock overflow costing the company $900 million (?591m) in price reductions.

?We are working hard to deliver compelling new devices and high value experiences from Microsoft and our partners in the coming months, including new Windows 8.1 tablets and PCs?, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said during the company?s earnings call.

Amy Hood, CFO at Microsoft added: ?While our fourth quarter results were impacted by the decline of the PC market, we continue to see strong demand for our enterprise and cloud offerings, resulting in record unearned revenue balance this quarter.?

Although the advert sees the iPad?s Siri dictator state ?this isn?t going to end well for me is it?? based on Microsoft?s well publicised woes, it would appear that despite the advert?s bravado it is the Surface RT more than the Apple tablet facing a troubling end.

Couples Try Harder in Long-Distance Relationships | Psych Central ...

Couples Try Harder in Long-Distance Relationships New research published in the Journal of Communication suggests that people in long-distance relationships often have stronger bonds from more constant, and deeper, communication than normal relationships.

The belief is that geographical distance mobilizes parties to engage in deeper, more satisfying communication.

Communications researchers Drs. Crystal Jiang, City University of Hong Kong and Jeffrey Hancock, Cornell University, asked dating couples in long-distance and geographically close relationships to report their daily interactions over different media: face-to-face, phone calls, video chat, texting, instant messenger, and email.

Over a week, they reported to what extent they shared about themselves and experienced intimacy, and to what extent they felt their partners did the same thing.

When comparing the two types of relationships, Jiang and Hancock found that long-distance couples felt more intimate to each other, and this greater intimacy is driven by two tendencies: long-distance couples disclosed themselves more, and they idealized their partners? behaviors.

Interestingly, these two tendencies become more pronounced when couples communicated in text-based, asynchronous and mobile media because they made more efforts to overcome the media constraints.

Long-distance relationships have been unexplored for years. One of the reasons is that the general public believes they are rare and not normal.

Previous studies have focused on how couples cope with problems, such as jealousy and stress, but until recently, several studies have shown that long-distance relationships are not always problematic.

Some surveys even indicate that long-distance couples have equal or better relationship qualities than geographically close couples.

To address the difference of opinions, the current study was designed to observe what exactly happens in long-distance relational communication, particularly in comparison to geographically close ones.

Long-distance romance is much more common nowadays. Couples get separated for a variety of reasons, due to modern mobility, and they choose to maintain the relationships through all kinds of communication technologies.

Recent statistics show that 3 million married couples in the U.S. live apart; 25to 50 percent of college students are currently in long-distance relationships and up to 75 percent of them have engaged in one at some point. On the other hand, people think long-distance relationships are challenging.

?Indeed, our culture emphasizes being together physically and frequent face-to-face contact for close relationships, but long-distance relationships clearly stand against all these values. People don?t have to be so pessimistic about long-distance romance,? said Jiang.

?The long-distance couples try harder than geographically close couples in communicating affection and intimacy, and their efforts do pay back.?

Congressional Black Caucus Members Support Jesse Jackson?s Threat To Boycott Florida Over Zimmerman Verdict?

I?m sure Florida will survive a CBC boycott.

Via The Hill:

A number of House Democrats are lining up behind the Rev. Jesse Jackson?s threat for an economic boycott of Florida following the not-guilty verdict in the death of Trayvon Martin.

The lawmakers, all members of the Congressional Black Caucus, are fierce critics of the process that led to George Zimmerman?s acquittal in the fatal shooting last year of the Florida teenager. Exerting pressure on Florida?s economy as Jackson is suggesting, they said, could help overturn the state?s controversial stand-your-ground laws that many contend contributed to the tragedy.

?That?s probably the best strategy, because people understand dollars and cents,? Rep. Lacy Clay (D-Mo.) said Friday. ?And they understand, if there?s a significant drop-off in revenues ? at conventions, at Disney World and Universal Studios ? that that will get the attention of the powerful.?

Clay said he?d like to see ?a multi-pronged strategy? that includes legislation, ?getting laws overturned by courts, as well as an economic boycott.?

Rep. Bennie Thompson echoed that message. The Mississippi Democrat called the verdict ?a travesty? that ?does not speak well for this country,? and said he would ?absolutely? support an economic boycott of the state.

(AP Photo/Gregorio Borgia, File)

(AP) ? Five employees of an Italian cruise company were convicted Saturday of manslaughter in the Costa Concordia shipwreck that killed 32 people, receiving sentences of less than three years that lawyers for victims and survivors criticized as too lenient.

The guilty verdicts for multiple manslaughter and negligence were the first reached in the sinking of the cruise liner carrying more than 4,000 crew and passengers near the Tuscan shore in January 2012.

The ship's captain, the only remaining defendant, was denied a plea bargain and is being tried separately. He faces up to 20 years, if convicted of manslaughter, causing the shipwreck and abandoning the ship.

On Saturday, lawyers representing the 32 victims of the shipwreck said the sentences of the plea bargain ? a fraction of what is usually handed down for manslaughter ? were inadequate given the gravity of the disaster.

"It seems like a sentence for illegal construction," said lawyer Massimiliano Gabrielli. "It's an embarrassment."

Another lawyer for victims, Daniele Bocciolini, called the sentences "insufficient" and questioned the prosecutors' hypothesis placing the lion's share of the blame on Capt. Francesco Schettino.

The five employees of the Costa Crociere SpA cruise company were charged for their respective roles in the nautical maneuver that put the ship in peril, evacuation and response to the emergency.

The longest sentence went to the company's crisis coordinator, who was sentenced to two years and 10 months. Concordia's hotel director was sentenced to two years and six months, while two bridge officers and a helmsman got sentences ranging from one year and eight months to one year and 11 months.

The bridge officials and helmsman were also convicted of a charge of causing a shipwreck, in addition to multiple manslaughter and negligence.

The court's reasoning for its decision will be released within 90 days, as is standard in Italy.

Prosecutors accused the crisis coordinator, who wasn't aboard the ship, of downplaying the severity of the emergency and delaying adequate response, while the hotel director was charged for his role in the evacuation, described by passengers as chaotic.

The helmsman was blamed for steering the ship in the wrong direction after Schettino ordered a corrective maneuver.

Prosecutor Francesco Verusio said the convictions confirmed investigators' version of events.

"I don't think there are any more doubts about the responsibility that falls above all on the shoulders of Schettino," Verusio said.

Schettino is charged with manslaughter for causing the shipwreck off the Tuscan island of Giglio and abandoning the vessel with thousands aboard. That trial opened this week, and was continued after two hearings until the end of September.

The Concordia, on a week-long Mediterranean cruise, speared a jagged granite reef when, prosecutors allege, Schettino steered the ship too close to Giglio's rocky shores as a favor to a crewman whose relatives live on the island. Schettino has denied the charges and insisted that the rock was not in nautical maps.

The reef sliced a 70-meter-long (230-foot) gash in the hull. Seawater rushed in, causing the ship to rapidly lean to one side until it capsized, then drifted to a rocky stretch of seabed just outside the island's tiny port.

Survivors have described a delayed and confused evacuation. The bodies of two victims were never found, but they were declared dead after a long search.

The Ramadan Challenge: Shop And Cook While Hungry And Thirsty ...

Around the world, hundreds of millions of Muslims are fasting from sunrise to sunset. The Muslim holy month of Ramadan began last week and continues until Aug. 7. That's 30 days of avoiding food and drink all day. But in many families, someone still has to prepare a hearty, and sometimes festive, dinner every night.

"Ramadan is a big change in routine," says Jehad Outteneh, a Palestinian in Jerusalem who shops and cooks for her family of eight.

I followed Jehad one day to learn her tricks, and her recipes. We started at the vegetable stand just a few steps inside old Jerusalem's Damascus Gate.

Today, as on many days, she buys bright red tomatoes and small cucumbers ? the standard base for a Middle Eastern salad ? plus mint, cilantro and lemons to spice it up. Today she adds lettuce for a second salad, a touch of festivity for tonight's dinner. It's the second week of Ramadan, and the fast is broken daily at sundown by a special dinner, the iftar.

That's still several hours away.

"During Ramadan you feel the food has a different taste because you wait so long to eat," Jehad says.

Jehad always seems to be smiling. She was born in Jerusalem's Old City, above the maze of small alleyways crowded with tourists, pilgrims and residents. And she and her husband, Hattim, raised six children in an apartment here that, amazingly, shuts out the din. She shops for food every day and knows almost all the merchants.

The rest of Jehad's shopping list for tonight's supper: chicken, cauliflower and rice for the main dish, maqluba. Walnuts, sweet cheese and pancakes for qatayef, a dessert dumpling and traditional Ramadan treat. She buys a couple of bottles of soft drinks to supplement a chilled homemade carob drink in the fridge at home.

By the time she lugs all her bags home, it's 5:30.

"I'm hungry," she says. "And really thirsty."

But it's another couple of hours until sundown. Time to cook.

Jehad chose maqluba for tonight's dinner because it's quick and the family loves it. She can't taste as she goes, of course, but it doesn't matter. She's cooked this dish hundreds of times, the way her mother taught her long ago.

"I only cook what my mother cooked," she says. She never looks at recipes; she says she wouldn't need one for Palestinian food.

She manages to prepare food despite hunger pangs by focusing on the spirit of Ramadan. "It's all for God," she says. "All day I try to do good."

Jehad's family drifts in and out as she boils chicken, fries cauliflower, twists the stems off the mint and cilantro bunches. Her daughter Amani, 20, helps chop tomatoes, but says she couldn't do much else as she has no clue how to cook. Her younger sister learned when she got engaged, and Amani expects to do the same.

Hiba, 21, pouring yogurt into bowls, accidentally licks a bit off her finger. She hurries to rinse out her mouth. She says she's tired, thirsty and has a headache. Amani says she sleeps or watches movies to pass the long Ramadan days, and hates it when there's a scene of people eating. But now sunset is getting closer and they hurry to finish preparations.

Amani arranges pickles. Jehad makes fillings for the qatayef: one a walnut-cinnamon-sugar mix and one sweet cheese. Her sons Ibrahim and Ismael, both in their 20s, and youngest daughter Huda, 13, wake up from naps and wander in.

With about 15 minutes to go, Jehad turns on the radio. A man is reading from the Koran. In Jerusalem, there are two signals ending the day's fast: a cannon, which the same family has been in charge of for more than 100 years, and the call "Allahu Akbar" ? God is great ? over the radio.

The table is set. The maqtuba has been transferred from pot to serving dish. The salads are dressed. The drinks are out of the refrigerator.

The cannon sounds ? it's loud! "Allahu Akbar" wafts in from the kitchen. This is also the call to evening prayer, and outside in the Old City streets worshippers are headed toward the Holy Sanctuary to pray at the Al-Aqsa mosque or the Haram al-Sharif. But in Jehad's home, it's time to eat.

"I think God wanted us to eat first, then pray," she says, smiling.

Jehad Outteneh's Maqluba Recipe

Serves eight

2 medium chickens cleaned and cut into parts

1 medium white onion

1 head cauliflower

Cooking oil

Cardamom powder

Salt

2 pounds white rice

Cumin

Turmeric

Soak the chicken parts briefly in salty water. Rinse. Put in a pot and cover with water. Set stove temperature to medium/high.

Add 1 chopped medium white onion. Continue to cook for about 45 minutes. Add water as needed. (Jehad uses hot water from the electric teapot.)

Chop cauliflower into bite-sized pieces. In a separate pot, pour in enough oil to mostly cover the cauliflower. Heat oil and add cauliflower when hot enough to fry. It's ready when its honey colored. Remove from oil; place on paper towel to drain. Let it cool, then add cauliflower to pot with chicken. Add six big shakes of cardamom powder and some salt.

While the chicken and cauliflower continue to cook, rinse rice. Add a small amount of salt and a generous amount of turmeric; mix with the wet rice. Add the rice to the chicken and cauliflower pot. Continue to cook until rice is ready. Serve warm with yogurt.

It's pretty slim pickings when it comes to games on Windows Phone. The platform has largely been ignored by developers and when it wasn't, the games it got were pretty outdated. Only a few months ago Temple Run 1 was released, right around the same time Temple Run 2 was released for iOS and Android. So Windows Phone users will be very happy to know what Halo: Spartan Assault is now finally available on the Store. Secret court OKs continued US phone surveillance

(AP) ? A secret intelligence court has decided to continue an order that forces Verizon Communications to turn over hundreds of millions of telephone records to the government each day in its search for foreign terror or espionage suspects.

The longstanding Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court order must be renewed every three months. It had been set to expire Friday.

National Intelligence Director James Clapper announced the new order.

The surveillance program has been under intense scrutiny since June, when former CIA employee and National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden leaked details of two top secret U.S. surveillance programs that critics say violate privacy rights.

Snowden has been charged with espionage and is seeking asylum from several countries, including Russia.

Google navigation iPad app improves with Maps

Following on from a few hints, it was no shock to see a Google Maps app update for the iPad and other iOS devices. Google Maps version 2.0 comes with several new features, one of which is now added support for the iPad and iPad mini, as it was only smaller iOS devices that were supported before.

The new Google navigation iPad app has been a long time coming, and now is very similar to the one that Android tablet users have been enjoying, although they also have an updated version of the app as well. We love the idea that the iPad now has improved navigation, which also comes with live traffic updates.

The Google Maps iPad app features are all new of course, but some of the improvements that the iPhone will benefit from include a new Explore function, which will give you the facility to browse popular places, including places to eat and shop.

Google Maps for iPad and iPhone will also come with another new feature that will map malls, airports, and transit stations. The new update was only available to iOS users in Asia, but now the US. can download the Google Maps navigation update, although we are also hearing that those of you in the UK have been successful in downloading version 2.0.

Some of the reviews have not been too positive towards this update, and feel that each time they update, the app just gets worse. There seems to be a few users who are upset that Google Maps does not offer an offline feature, allowing you to view saved maps while not being connected. Another needed feature is 45 degree HD satellite imagery, but we?re not certain if this is just the will of a select few, or a much needed feature by most of you?

Are you happy with the new Google Maps for iPad, and the new features that come with it for the iPhone?

Full details on the new version can be found on iTunes.

Senators ready to restore lower college loan rates

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A bipartisan compromise on student loans promises better deals for students and parents over the next few years but could spell higher rates as the economy improves.

The Senate deal pegs the interest rates on new loans to the financial markets and was expected to come to a vote next week, well before students returning to campus this fall have to sign their loan agreements.

Under the deal, undergraduates this fall could borrow at a 3.9 percent interest rate. Graduate students would have access to loans at 5.4 percent, and parents would be able to borrow at 6.4 percent. Those rates would climb as the economy improves and it becomes more expensive for the government to borrow money.

The compromise undoes the doubling of rates on some student loans that took hold on July 1, and one analysis of the Senate deal suggests incoming freshmen would save more than $3,300 in interest.

"We have gone through weeks of negotiations and we have an agreement," said Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill.

At the White House, spokesman Jay Carney said President Barack Obama was "glad to see that a compromise seems to be coming together."

And Sen. Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., said students benefited: "For every one of them, the interest rates on their loans will be lower."

At least for now. The compromise could be a good deal for students through the 2015 academic year, but then interest rates are expected to climb above where they were when students left campus in the spring.

Even in announcing the compromise, it was clear the negotiations were dicey.

"While this is not the agreement any of us would have written, and many of us would like to have seen something quite different, I believe that we have come a very long way on reaching common ground," Durbin told reporters.

Moments later, Democratic Sen. Tom Harkin of Iowa, chairman of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, said he would revisit the whole agreement this fall, when his panel takes up a rewrite of the Higher Education Act.

"Can we change it? Sure, we can change it," Harkin said. "It's not the Ten Commandments, for God's sake."

Harkin did little to hide his unhappiness with the compromise but said there were few options to avoid a costly hike on students returning to campus this fall.

A Harkin ally, Sen. Jack Reed of Rhode Island, said he would vote against the bill.

"We might see one or two or three years of rates that are relatively below that number, but inevitably, mathematically those rates will go beyond 6.8 percent," Reed said on the Senate floor after the deal was announced.

As part of the compromise, Democrats won a protection for students that capped rates at a maximum 8.25 percent for undergraduates. Graduate students would not pay rates higher than 9.5 percent, and parents' rates would top out at 10.5 percent.

Using Congressional Budget Office estimates, rates would not reach those limits in the next 10 years.

And one analysis from a former director of that office predicted students starting college this fall would face $3,325 less in interest payments when they graduate. Doug Holtz-Eakin, who leads the conservative American Action Forum, used the average subsidized and unsubsidized loans students were estimated to borrow during each the next four years of college.

Lawmakers engaged in near-constant work to undo a rate hike that took hold for subsidized Stafford loans on July 1. Rates for new subsidized Stafford loans doubled from 3.4 percent to 6.8 percent.

On Wednesday, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau estimated outstanding student debt at $1.2 trillion ? up 20 percent in just two years. Student loans are now the largest form of consumer debt behind mortgages.

The Congressional Budget Office estimates 21 million loans would be issued in 2013. Students often take a combination of subsidized and unsubsidized loans to pay for their education.

The rapid growth in debt is raising alarm among experts, and there is growing evidence student debt is weighing down the economy ? for instance, by delaying the ability of young graduates to buy homes.

The increase follows the jump in the cost of higher education.

The tuition sticker price at public four-year colleges is up 27 percent beyond overall inflation over the last five years, according to the latest figures from the College Board. This past year it rose nearly 5 percent to an annual average of $8,655 nationwide.

Only about one-third of full-time students pay that published price, and the average net price ? what the average student does pay after grants, scholarships, loans and federal tax credits and deductions ? is just $2,910 for a year of studies. But net prices have been rising, too, and tuition is just part of the cost of college. Including room and board, the average annual sticker price at public colleges is now $17,860, and students pay on average $12,110.

At private four-year colleges, the annual average full tuition price is now just under $40,000, with the average student paying $23,840.

The bipartisan student loan compromise closely hews to what House Republicans passed earlier this year. Both Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell and Republican House Speaker John Boehner suggested the outlines of the proposal were acceptable to the GOP rank-and-file members who have pushed for a link between interest rates and the financial markets.

Even House Democrats who opposed the GOP-led deal there appeared ready to go along.

"I'm encouraged that bipartisan efforts continue in the Senate to reverse the student loan interest rate hike," said Rep. George Miller, the top Democrat on the House Committee on Education and the Workforce.

Few students had borrowed for fall classes. Students typically do not sign loans until just before they return to campus, and lawmakers have until the August recess to restore the lower rates. The students who had borrowed for summer programs since July 1 would have their rates retroactively reduced.

The deal was estimated to reduce the deficit by $715 million over the next decade.

Google co-founder Larry Page was seen last Friday showing off the company's high-tech specs at the wedding of his brother-in-law McLain Southworth to Yasemin Denari in the town square of Motovun in Croatia.?

The tech tycoon wore his Google Glass as he stood in a line of groomsmen at the altar, fiddling with the eye-piece as the ceremony took place.

The gadget, which is not yet on the market, appeared to be attracting plenty of attention from wedding guests.?

On the tech side, Facebook Inc founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg was spotted at a dinner to kick off the conference shaking hands and chatting with Eric Schmidt and Nikesh Arora of Google.

Despite not joining his colleagues, Page did not waste the chance to gain more publicity for Google Glass during the glitzy wedding held in the town's public square.

Google Glass, which could be on sale this Christmas for around $1,500, has become the latest 'must-have' tech gadget.?

In May, Congressmen wrote to Larry Page to ask what steps Google was taking to protect the privacy of non-users. Google reassured government officials that they were carefully considering the 'new issues' the glasses might raise.?

Perhaps how to deal with an irate bride might be one of them.

Britain throws another 60 million at the Skylon spaceplane, hopes midlife crisis over soon

After a series of successful tests on the Skylon spaceplane's SABRE engine, the UK government has decided to invest another £60 million to continue developing it. The scramjet-based tech could pave the way for cheaper space travel, since it carries little oxygen on board and can maneuver like an airplane before rockets kick it into orbit. Earlier, a key component that chills air from 1,830 to minus 302 degrees Fahrenheit in 1/100th of a second passed its trials with flying colors. That means the project team can move to the next phase: building and ground testing a prototype SABRE engine. Though billions of pounds more would be needed to eventually develop a Skylon vehicle, a European Space Agency spokesman thinks it would be worth it, saying "we have something here that is really unique." Let's hope they can match recent scramjet success stateside and avoid the whole crashing part.

Will Baker Hughes (BHI) Beat Earnings Estimates This Quarter?

We expect Baker Hughes Inc. (BHI), one of the largest oilfield service companies in the world, to beat expectations when the company reports its second-quarter 2013 results before the opening bell on Jul 19, 2013. ?

Why a Likely Positive Surprise?

Our proven model shows that Baker Hughes is likely to beat earnings because it has the right combination of two key factors.??

Positive Zacks ESP: Expected Surprise Prediction or ESP (Read: Zacks Earnings ESP: A Better Method), which represents the difference between the Most Accurate estimate of 66 cents and the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 64 cents, stands at +3.13%. This is a meaningful and leading indicator of a likely positive earnings surprise for shares.?

Zacks Rank #3 (Hold): The stocks with a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong buy), #2 (Buy) and #3 (Hold) have a significantly higher chance of beating earnings. The Sell-rated stocks (#4 and #5) should never be considered while going into an earnings announcement.

The combination of Baker Hughes? Zacks Rank #3 (Hold) and +3.13% ESP makes us very confident of a positive earnings beat on Jul 19, 2013. ?

What is Driving the Better-Than-Expected Earnings?

Baker Hughes' strong portfolio of products and services should help it post better-than-average results in North America and enable it to further expand in the international markets.

Moreover, Baker Hughes has a competitive set of technologies, which allows it to bolster its activity in the deepwater Gulf of Mexico (GoM). The company has successfully introduced products such as the AutoTrak Rotary Steerable System and advanced completion systems in the region that have a meaningful impact on its earnings and cash flows.

Finally, both oil and natural gas-directed drilling increased from the tough levels of mid 2009 with majority of the recent drilling being oil-directed. The increase in oil drilling was supported by high commodity prices and the development of several new oil shale plays. Incremental gas drilling was driven by higher activity in the gas shale plays. Being one of the largest oilfield service companies, Baker Hughes is capitalizing on these favorable trends.

Other Stocks to Consider

Here are some other energy firms that are worth considering as these have the right combination to post an earnings beat this quarter:

W&T Offshore Inc. (WTI) has an Earnings ESP of +9.09% and a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy).

PetroQuest Energy Inc. (PQ) has an Earnings ESP of +28.57% and a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy).

Core Laboratories NV(CLB) has an Earnings ESP of +0.76% and a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy).

Nissan resurrects Datsun in India

HONG KONG (CNNMoney) -

Datsun is back from the dead. But only in India.

A new ultra-cheap Datsun model was unveiled Monday in New Delhi as part of parent company Nissan's push into emerging markets.

The car will be the first to carry the Datsun badge since Nissan mothballed the brand in the 1980s.

The new five-door hatchback is called the Datsun Go, and it will go on sale early next year in India. The car will be priced below 400,000 Indian rupees ($6,680 dollars).

While full details about the car's performance and technical specifications were not immediately available, the Go will with have a 1.2 liter engine and five-speed transmission.

The car is designed to compete against other low-cost options in developing markets, where growth for private transport is accelerating.

"We see significant opportunities in these growth markets, where demand for cars is increasing and will continue to do so," Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn said Monday.

Ghosn said other new Datsun models will be unveiled this year in Indonesia and Russia. A move into South Africa will start in 2014. The carmaker has given no indication it plans to revive the brand in North America.

Nissan models are most often aimed at middle-class buyers, while the company's Infiniti brand attracts wealthier consumers. The revival of Datsun should help Nissan pursue lower-income customers.

The ceremonial debut of the new model in New Delhi had a youthful bent. The presentation featured a neon-clad dance troupe and music that sampled from a popular Daft Punk song.

Datsun was founded almost a century ago in Japan, and became part of Nissan in the 1930s. The automaker entered the U.S. market in the late 1950s, and eventually made a splash with models like the iconic Datsun 240Z sports car.
